Detroit -- The Grand Valley State women's basketball team's undefeated run in GLIAC play came to an end on Friday (Jan. 2) night. The No. 17 Lakers, who were one of two conference clubs with an unblemished record in league contests, fell 89-63 to No. 11 Wayne State in Detroit.
Â
GVSU, which fell to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in GLIAC games, shot just 33 percent from the field, while the Warriors made 33 of their 67 attempts (49.3 percent). Despite Wayne State's exceptional length and size on the interior, the Lakers collected 12 offensive boards and 39 total rebounds.
Â
Despite the loss, sophomore forward
Piper Tucker and junior forward
Jammie Botruff turned in their best performances of the season.
Â
Tucker scored a season-high 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting and nabbed a team-high seven rebounds. All of her boards came off the defensive glass. Meanwhile, Botruff poured in a career-high 13 points. Nine of the Gladstone, Michigan native's points came from distance. She also grabbed five rebounds.
Â
Senior forward
Kat LaPrairie set a new milestone in the Laker record book as well. The Rockford High School product drained a pair of triples, giving her 124 for her career. Those two long-range buckets moved her past Erin Cyplik and into sixth place all time for three-pointers by a GVSU player.
Â
Tucker's jumper just 20 seconds into the game gave the Lakers their first and only lead of the evening. Wayne State answered with eight consecutive points to seize a six-point advantage. Tucker responded with a three at the 16:18 mark to cut the deficit to three, but GVSU soon found itself overwhelmed.
Â
Wayne State outscored the Lakers 36-25 in the final 16 minutes of the opening half. GVSU added 39 points in the second stanza, though it had no answer for Shareta Brown. The conference's leading scorer and rebounder totaled 32 points and 24 rebounds in 37 minutes.
Â
The Lakers will be back in action on Sunday (Jan. 4) at Findlay. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
