No. 18 Grand Valley State dropped 28-24 decision to No. 10 Ohio Dominican in front of 15,005 fans, the fourth largest crowd in Lubbers Stadium history, Saturday (Sept. 13) evening. GVSU (0-2, 0-1 GLIAC) will hit the road next Saturday (Sept. 20) at Ferris State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Ohio Dominican struck first, returning a blocked punt 25 yards for a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. However, GVSU regrouped, driving 59 yards in nine plays and 59 yards for a score. Senior QB Heath Parling hit redshirt freshman receiver Brandon Bean with a short pass that he took 18 yards for the touchdown. The reception was the first of his career for Bean.

ODU used a big play from RB Brandon Schoen to move back in front 14-7.  Schoen took a handoff from Mark Miller and raced 88 yards for a TD. Following a couple of punts, GVSU took advantage of a 21-yard punt that gave the Lakers great field position. Parling hit tight end Jamie Potts on a screen and the junior took to the Ohio Dominican one yard-line. Senior running back Michael Ratay punched it in to tie the game at 14 with 33 seconds left in the opening quarter.

The Lakers ensuing drive stalled out at their own 22, but a 46-yard punt was fumbled by ODU and recovered by the Lakers' Alton Voss at the ODU 37.  Parling hit Potts with a 21 yard completion and finished off the drive with touchdown pass to sophomore Matt Williams in the corner of the end zone to give the Lakers their first lead of the contest 21-14. The reception and TD were the first of Williams' career for the Lakers.

Grand Valley State took a 24-14 lead following a 35-yard Joel Schipper field goal in the third quarter, but Ohio Dominican used two fourth quarter touchdowns to pick up the win.

Parling recorded career-high in completions (28) and attempts (48) for 286 yards and two TDs. Potts hauled in six catches for 89 yards, while Ratay caught six passes for 33 yards. Punter Chris Picano averaged 43.9 yards on eight punts, dropping five inside the ODU 20 yard line. Senior DL Frank Boenzi tallied nine tackles, while sophomore Marquez Gollman chipped in eight stops and picked off a pass. DeVonte Jones picked off two passes.
