ODU used a big play from RB Brandon Schoen to move back in front 14-7. Schoen took a handoff from Mark Miller and raced 88 yards for a TD. Following a couple of punts, GVSU took advantage of a 21-yard punt that gave the Lakers great field position. Parling hit tight end
Jamie Potts on a screen and the junior took to the Ohio Dominican one yard-line. Senior running back
Michael Ratay punched it in to tie the game at 14 with 33 seconds left in the opening quarter.

The Lakers ensuing drive stalled out at their own 22, but a 46-yard punt was fumbled by ODU and recovered by the Lakers'
