HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team picked up an important GLIAC victory on Saturday (Mar. 22), defeating Michigan Tech, 6-3, handing the Huskies their first conference loss of the season.
The victory moves GVSU to 11-5 overall on the season with a 3-1 mark in the GLIAC, while Michigan Tech falls to 8-3 overall with a matching 3-1 record in the conference.
The Lakers will continue their upper peninsula trip on Sunday (Mar. 23) with a 10 a.m. match against Lake Superior State.
GVSU actually fell behind early on, losing two of three doubles matches. The lone victory came from the team of Andrew Darrell and Billy Heckman in the No. 3 flight, as they picked up an 8-5 win.
In singles, however, the Lakers won five of six matches, including a 7-5, 6-0 victory by Francis Bertrand over Felipe dos Santos, who was ranked 19th in the region.
Andrew Darrell picked up his second victory of the day with a win at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2. Billy Heckman did the same, picking up a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles.
Jack Heiniger (6-1, 6-4) won at No. 4 singles, while Andrew Bole won a 6-2, 7-6 (7-0) match at No. 5 singles. Michael Kaye nearly made it a singles sweep, taking both sets to a tiebreaker in a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3) loss.
