#14 GVSU Notches Another Sweep, 3-0 at Lake Superior State

Werner tallies eight kills in 10 swings and adds season-high eight blocks

For the fourth time in the last eight days, #14 Grand Valley State won a match by a 3-0 sweep, as the Lakers traveled to Sault Ste. Marie and topped Lake Superior State in straight sets, 25-14, 25-20, and 25-22. GVSU dominated defensively on Saturday (Nov. 1), owning a 13-4 edge in blocks, while forcing LSSU into 22 hitting errors.

Including Saturday's win over the other Lakers, Grand Valley State picked up sweeps over Northern Michigan, Michigan Tech, and Northwood in the last week. With the victory, GVSU is 19-4 on the season and 15-1 in league play. Lake Superior State falls to 2-21 overall and 1-14 in GLIAC action.

Grand Valley State played 15 different players on Saturday, with 10 of those Lakers recording kills. Three GVSU setters recorded double-digits in assists, as freshman Katie Olson paced the way with 13 assists, followed by seniors Kaitlyn Wolters (12) and Clair Ruhenkamp (11).

Sophomore Josie Werner - playing in her hometown - delivered a team-high eight kills in just 10 swings (without an error). She also added eight blocks, which is a new career-high and the most by any Laker this season. Two of the eight blocks were solo rejections. Senior Abby Aiken also recorded eight kills and hit .353 overall.

In set one, Grand Valley State scored six straight points behind Christina Canepa's serving (including two aces) to open a 6-2 advantage. LSSU kept the score close at 11-9 before the visiting Lakers ran away with the rest of the set. GVSU used 14 kills from eight different players and hit .273 in the opening frame, while Lake Superior State owned a -.059 attack percentage.

Lake Superior State was up 13-11 in the second set before GVSU scored fourth straight points to take a 15-13 advantage it would not relinquish. Aiken and freshman Sydney Doby had two kills apiece, while Doby added a solo block and an ace to push the Laker lead to 20-16. From there, Grand Valley State closed out the set with two late kills from Aiken.

Neither team could take control of the third set and LSSU was ahead 19-17 after scoring three straight points. Werner and senior Ally Simmons combined for back-to-back blocks to tie the score at 19-19. Simmons put down consecutive kills to put GVSU up 21-20. After LSSU took a 22-21 lead, juniors Kaleigh Lound and Jessica Majerle finished off Lake Superior State with four straight points. Lound had a kill, the duo combined for a block, Majerle added a putaway, and Lound closed the match with another kill for the 25-22 win.

After moving into second place in career digs on Friday night, Canepa added 17 digs to her total in Saturday's win. Lound provided six kills, while Kourtney Wolters notched five kills and five digs. Doby, Majerle, and Carley Gross had four kills apiece.

GVSU returns to Allendale to close out the regular season next weekend inside the Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers face Saginaw Valley State next Friday night (Nov. 7) at 7:00 p.m. and finish with Wayne State on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 8) at 2:00 p.m.
