#1 GVSU Defeats #25 Wayne State 24-10

Detroit, Michigan - #1-Ranked Grand Valley State claimed a 24-10 victory at #25 Wayne State Saturday afternoon in Detroit, Michigan. GVSU completes its fourth consecutive undefeated regular season with the win. GVSU will now await the NCAA DII Football National Championship selection set for Sunday at 3 p.m.

Grand Valley State used 21 second half points to pull out the win. Wayne State scored first as Joique Bell scored on a 22-yard run with 12:14 left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. Todd Carter kicked a 20-yard field goal with 14 seconds left in the first half to conclude a 15-play, 68-yard drive that consumed 6:36 off the clock for the Lakers' only points of the first half. Wayne State took a 10-3 lead with a David Chudzinski 21-yard field goal at the 10:03 mark of the third quarter. From that point on it was all Grand Valley State. The Lakers tied the game at 10-10 when sophomore RB James Berezik scored on a 1-yard run with 6:06 left in the third quarter. Grand Valley State took its first lead of the game at the 13:22 mark of the fourth quarter when Iciek hit senior TE Jonn Mathews with a 19-yard TD pass on fourth down. GVSU sealed the win with a 14-play, 80-yard drive that took 7:39 off the clock. Berezik scored on 5-yard run to give GVSU a 24-10 lead with 1:52 left in the game.

Berezik notched the third-best single-game rushing total in Laker football history with his 234 yards on 35 carries. Blake Smolen rushed for 74 yards on 12 carries, while Brad Iciek completed 11-of-24 passes for 112 yards and one TD. Mathews caught five passes for 58 yards, while senior TE Scott Blasko caught two key passes for 18 yards. GVSU rushed for a season-high 311 yards and totaled 423 yards of total offense. The Laker defense came up big, led by freshman safety Zach Breen's 11 tackles. Sophomore LB Justin Victor caused a key fumble and recorded seven tackles as the Laker defense limited Wayne State to 279 yards of total offense. GVSU also held a huge advantage in time of possession 37:01-22:59.
