Who must be licensed?
Any individual, business, or organization who wishes to use GVSU's trademarks or verbiage on a product, including promotional items or advertising, must obtain a license prior to the sale of goods. This includes any sale to internal GVSU departments, on-campus organizations, and student groups.
**Any retail outlet who wishes to carry GVSU licensed merchandise is responsible for using a licensed vendor to fulfill their order.
Types of Licenses
Standard License - allows the licensee to produce products for resale, including but not limited to, wholesale and retail.
Internal Usage License - allows the licensee to produce products intended to be sold directly to the University, not for resale (not including sales to the University Bookstore). This license only applies when items of internal usage are exempt from royalties.
In-State License - same as a Standard License, but only applies Grand Valley State University; your company must also be located in Michigan.
Cost of a License
Standard license - $500 non-refundable application fee + annual royalty payments
Internal usage license - $250 non-refundable application fee + annual royalty payments
In-state license - $250 non-refundable application fee + annual royalty payments

Royalties
Any licensed vendor is required to report royalties on all sales made each calendar year. This includes sales to an external retailer, GVSU departments, on-campus organizations, and student groups. Please visit

Royalty Rates
The current GVSU Athletics royalty rate is 12% of sale.
The GVSU Vintage royalty rate is 15% of sale*.
How do I become licensed?

Becoming a licensed vendor helps you reach the GVSU market, in a legal, safe, and respectable way, leading to great returns.
