UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The No. 6 Grand Valley State women's soccer team claimed a 2-0 road win against Saginaw Valley State Sunday (Sept. 20) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 5-1-2 on the season and 3-0-1 in the GLIAC.
GVSU opened the scoring early in the ninth minute off the foot of
Vesna Dennison with the assist by
Lina Rea. Dennison received a pass by Rea from the right side of the box towards the left side and was able to kick it low and past the goalkeeper at the bottom left corner of the goal for the game's first goal. That goal was Dennison's fourth goal of the season, while Rea picked up her third assist of the season.
The Lakers would add to the lead just two minutes later in the 11
th minute to make it 2-0.
Sonya Mehta would receive a pass from
Ava Kozak and would make a move to create space for a shot with the left foot that went in the goal at the bottom left corner. That goal was Mehta's fourth of the season, while Kozak picked up her third assist.
GVSU outshot Saginaw Valley State 13-5 and 6-0 in shots on goal. The two teams both produced six corner kicks.
Vesna Dennison scored the game-winning goal and notched five shots with one on frame.
Sonya Mehta posted her fourth goal of the season on two shots with both being on target.
Kendall Aikens added three shots with one on goal, while
Lina Rea and
Ava Kozak each dished out an assist.
Acadia Murphy and
Ana Spaine played all 90 minutes in the win.
Macie Hunter got the start in goal and earned the shutout win.
GVSU will have one game next week Sunday, September 27
