GVSU Takes First at Calvin Invitational

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Two first place finishes were claimed by Grand Valley State's men's and women's cross country teams at this morning's Knight Invite hosted by Calvin University. The men's squad scored 20 points in the competition, led by Flynn Pumpa's 25:22 finish. The women swept the field, scoring a perfect 15 points, with Allie Arnsman as the frontrunner with a finishing time of 21:18.

RESULTS

Noah Selvraj was the next racer to cross the line for the men, finishing third overall in the men's 8000m, with a finishing time of 25:30. Sebastian Ramirez followed, placing fourth at 25:40. Owen Westerkamp, Seth Conner, John Mabar and Conner Nolan rounded out the top seven Lakers with a 5-6-7-8 finish.

Behind Arnsman, women were led by Karen Kiratu, who finished second overall with a 21:28 time in the 6000m. Annika Sandman was third with a time of 21:47, Cara Newman finished fourth, while Annie Alkema and Ava Crews finished 5th and 6th both with personal records despite the tough muddy conditions. Filling out the top seven was true freshman Sophia Borter, crossing the line at 22:17 in her collegiate-debut. Other notable lifetime-bests belong to Shaela Elert who crossed the finish line 22nd at 22:43., and Clara Fletcher  (24:01.0).

Grand Valley State Cross Country will have a couple of weeks off before their next competitions, both coming in a packed October weekend, where both men and women will send split squads to Notre Dame for the Joe Piane Invite, and to Saginaw Valley State for the Red October Invite, both on October 2nd.
