Laker Volleyball Defeats Wayne State In Three Sets

DETROIT, MICH. – The 19th-ranked Grand Valley State went on their first road trip of the GLIAC schedule, traveling to Detroit for a matchup with reigning league champion Wayne State. GVSU took care of business, picking up their second sweep of the conference season, moving to 8-2 on the season and 2-0 in GLIAC play.

The Lakers battled to win set one 25-23, then picked up two convincing wins in the final frames, 25-15 and 25-16. Both teams traded blows in the first set, until a 7-3 Laker run put them up 18-13. Wayne State would battle back to tie the match at 23, but a Warrior attack error and a block from Brianna Stawski gave GVSU the win. Grand Valley jumped out to a 7-3 lead, then used a mid-set 7-0 scoring run to go up 19-9, never looking back to take a two sets to none lead. It was much of the same in the third set, as an 8-1 Laker run gave them control midway through the set, and they didn't let the Warriors back in, completing the weekend sweep.

Finley Arp led the offense with 11 kills, swinging at a .450 clip. Brianna Stawski also hit .450, recording nine kills. Paige Sanders and Kennedy Arp each totaled six kills apiece. Gabby Orlet dished out 28 assists, and Lexi Armstrong had 15 digs. Sanders was a force defensively at the net, tallying six total blocks, with the Lakers have nine as a team.
