ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Grand Valley State softball team split a GLIAC doubleheader at Roosevelt Wednesday (Apr. 8) afternoon. The Lakers move to 18-16 on the season and 8-4 in the GLIAC after falling 7-6 in eight innings in game one before winning game two 13-0 in five innings.
Game One – L, 7-6 (8-Innings)
GVSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Faith Edwards doubled to center field and scored on the next at bat off a double by
Elizabeth Wesoloski to left center. Next batter,
Grace Usher tripled through the left side to make it 2-0. Later in the inning,
Jenna Ballard notched a single to center field to score Usher. The Lakers would add to the lead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by
Liv Regenfuss to score
Kylee Hoebeke. Roosevelt would tie the game at four with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Lakers would retake the lead in the fifth inning off a two-run home run by Usher to left center. That home run was Usher's third of the season and second of the week. Roosevelt quickly answered with a two-run double to left field to tie the game at 6-6 in the sixth inning. Roosevelt would walk it off in game one in the eighth inning on an RBI single to right field.
Grace Usher batted 3-4 with a home run, triple, three RBI and two runs scored.
Elizabeth Wesoloski went 2-4 at the plate with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI.
Faith Edwards and
Kylee Hoebeke each added a double and run scored.
Game Two – W, 13-0 (5-Innings)
GVSU got out to an early lead in the first inning scoring two runs. Usher singled through the right side for her fourth RBI of the day to open the scoring. Later in the inning,
Kylee Hoebeke singled down the left field line to make it 2-0. The Lakers would add to the lead in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. Hoebeke drove in her second RBI of the game with a single to right field. Two batters later,
Carsyn Segorski singled down the left field line with the bases loaded to bring home Usher.
The Lakers would score three runs in the fourth inning and six runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 13-0 lead. In the fourth inning,
Kylee Hoebeke launched a three-run home run to center field. Hoebeke followed that up with a bases clearing three-run triple to right center in the fifth inning to make it 12-0.
Allyson Theunick added an RBI single through the left side later in the fifth inning to make it 13-0.
Hoebeke had a career game going a perfect 4-4 at the plate with a home run, triple, eight RBI and two runs scored.
Grace Usher batted 2-2 with three runs scored, one RBI, and two walks.
Carsyn Segorski went 2-4 with one RBI and one run scored, while
Faith Edwards added two hits and a run scored.
Kylie Swierkos got the start in the circle and earned the win after tossing all five innings allowing no runs off just one hit with three strikeouts.
