BARTOW, Fla. - The Grand Valley State softball team split a pair of games on day one of the Spring Games in Florida Sunday (Mar. 8) afternoon. The Lakers move to 6-6 after defeating American International 10-2 in six innings before falling to Ashland 2-1.
Game One vs American International – W, 10-2 (6-innings)
American International got out to an early lead by scoring one run in the top of the first inning. GVSU responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning off RBIs from
Grace Usher and
Kylee Hoebeke. AIC answered in the third inning with a solo home run to tie the game at two. The Lakers would retake the lead in the fourth inning to with two runs to take a 4-2 lead.
Faith Edwards singled to right field to score
Jasmine Mauk. Next batter,
Elizabeth Wesoloski doubled to left field left field to score Camyrn Hall.
GVSU would add a run in the fifth on a bases loaded walk and would explode for six runs in the sixth inning to claim the mercy rule win.
Kylie Sinal got the scoring going in the inning with a two-run single to left field. Later in the inning, Hall drove in two runs on a single to left field. Next batter,
Faith Edwards ended the game with an RBI double to left field.
Camryn Hall batted a perfect 4-4 at the plate with three runs scored and two runs batted in.
Elizabeth Wesoloski hit 3-4 with a double and one RBI. Jasmine Maul recorded three hits and two runs scored while
Faith Edwards drove in four runs on two hits with a double and a run scored.
Grace Usher and
Kylee Hoebeke each notched two hits, one run scored, and one RBI.
Lainey Cannon got the start in the circle and picked up her first collegiate win tossing all six innings allowing two runs off six hits with two strikeouts.
Game Two vs Ashland – L, 2-1
Ashland jumped out to a 1-0 start in the bottom of the first inning. GVSU would tie the game at one in the third inning on an RBI single by Wesoloski. The Eagles would take the lead off a solo home run in the sixth and would hang on for the one-run win.
GVSU will be back for day two at The Spring Games tomorrow (Mar. 9) when they face Northwood at 2:00 PM and Edinboro at 4:15 PM.
