ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State softball team closed out their GLIAC home opening weekend with a doubleheader sweep against Ferris State. The Lakers improve to 15-13 on the season and 5-1 in the GLIAC after winning game one 7-4 and game two 6-0.
Game One – W, 7-4
Ferris State got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Bulldogs led the game with an error and scored on a sacrifice fly. The Lakers answered with five runs off six hits in the bottom half of the inning.
Camryn Hall,
Faith Edwards and
Elizabeth Wesoloski led the inning with back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs. Next batter,
Grace Usher tied the game at one with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Hall. Two batters later,
Eliana Eiland cleared the bases with a two-run double to left center to give GVSU a 3-1 lead.
Liv Regenfuss would increase the lead with a double to right center to score Eiland.
Jenna Ballard would also double in the next at bat to right field to score Regenfuss to make it 5-1.
Ferris State would add a run in the fourth inning to make it 5-2. The Bulldogs singled up the middle to score a run from third, but
Eliana Eiland threw out the runner from second base at home to end the inning. GVSU responded with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. Wesoloski singled to left field to score
Carsyn Segorski from third. Next batter, Usher hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Hall from third. The Bulldogs would score two runs in the seventh inning to make it three-run game, but GVSU would close it out to secure the win.
Karli Dorr got the start in the circle and earned the win (6-2) after tossing all seven innings allowing two earned runs off eight hits with three strikeouts.
Camryn Hall batted 3-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Elizabeth Wesoloski went 3-4 at the plate with an RBI and run scored.
Liv Regenfuss hit 2-3 with a double, RBI and run scored.
Faith Edwards notched two hits with a run scored.
Eliana Eiland added a two-run double in the win.
Game Two – W, 6-0
GVSU opened the scoring with a four-run second inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Ferris State committed an error that allowed every runner to be safe for the first run of the game. Next batter,
Elizabeth Wesoloski singled through the left side to score
MaryJane Goodman. On the first pitch of the next at bat,
Grace Usher hit a two-run single through the right side to bring home Hall and Edwards to make it 4-0. The Lakers would add one run in the third on a sacrifice fly by
Camryn Hall to make it 5-0 and one run in the fifth on an RBI groundout by
Faith Edwards to make it 6-0 GVSU.
Grace Usher batted 3-4 with two RBI while
Faith Edwards went 2-4 at the plate with a run scored and RBI.
Camryn Hall notched an RBI and run scored while
Liv Regenfuss and
Jenna Ballard each added a hit and run scored.
Nevaeh Ingram got the start in the circle and earned the win after tossing all seven innings allowing no runs off six hits with four strikeouts.
