#8 GVSU Completes GLIAC 4-Game Sweep Over Purdue Northwest With 10-2 Win

#8 Grand Valley State completed a four-game, GLIAC sweep over Purdue Northwest with a 10-2 victory Sunday at the GVSU Baseball Field. The Lakers improve to 24-4 overall and 4-0 in GLIAC action. GVSU will begin a four-game series at #7 Wayne State starting Thursday (April 2) at 3 p.m.

Grand Valley State got on the board in the bottom of the second when freshman DH Josh Fleming and sophomore LF Caden Thelen opened the frame with singles and RF Ryan Stimac walked to load the bases. Senior 2B Ayden VanEnkevort singled to center to plate Fleming with the first run of the game. The Lakers added four runs in the bottom of the third on four hits. Senior 1B Jovan Gill and junior 3B Caleb Estrada doubled to open the inning and Thelen drove in a pair with a single to right. Freshman catcher Noah Brandt recorded his first career home run, a 2-run blast to right to up the lead to 5-1. 

Brandt started a two-out rally that plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth with a walk. Four consecutive singles by VanEnkevort, SS Evan Morrison, CF Jake Skaggs and Gill plated runs to up the lead to 8-1. Gill and Fleming then hit solo home runs in the bottom of the eighth. 

Freshman Jackson Kees picked up his team-leading sixth win of the year (6-0), yielding one unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts. Keagan Bobbitt, Ty Uchman and Duncan McLaughlin logged the final four innings. 

Gill led the offense, going 4-for-5 with a home run and a double, while Skaggs drove in a pair with a 1-for-4 outing. Thelen was 2-for-5 with two RBI and Fleming was 2-for-5 with a home run. Brandt drove in a pair with his home run and scored two runs, while VanEnkevort was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
