ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State softball team split their home opener against Lewis Wednesday (Mar. 25) afternoon at the GVSU Softball Field. The Lakers move to 11-13 on the season after winning game one 3-1 and falling in game two 6-5.
Game one – W, 3-1
GVSU got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Camryn doubled to left field and advanced to third on an
Elizabeth Wesoloski single. Next batter,
Grace Usher drove in Hall with an RBI groundout. The Lakers would make it 2-0 in the third inning on a Hall RBI single through the right side that scored
Jasmine Mauk. Lewis would get on the board in the fourth inning to cut the Laker lead in half. GVSU would quickly answer off a solo home run by
Kylee Hoebeke for her first collegiate home run.
Camryn Hall batted 3-3 with a double, one RBI and one run scored.
Kylee Hoebeke and
Elizabeth Wesoloski each went 2-3 at the plate. Hoebeke launched her first collegiate home run.
Karli Dorr got the start in the circle and earned the win to improve to 4-2 on the season after tossing all seven innings allowing just one run off six hits with seven strikeouts.
Game Two – L, 6-5
Lewis got out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning off a solo home run and RBI triple to right center. The Lakers responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.
Jenna Ballard launched a double to right center to score
Kylee Hoebeke. Later in the inning,
Allyson Theunick tied the game with an RBI single through the left side to bring home Ballard.
The Flyers would retake the lead in the fourth inning to go ahead 4-2 off an RBI triple and RBI bunt single. GVSU would bring across one run in the bottom half of the fourth to make it a 4-3 ballgame.
Eliana Eiland tripled to center field and would score on a Liv Regenfus RBI single to center field. GVSU would tie the game at four in the fifth inning off the bat of
Elizabeth Wesoloski who ripped a double to center field to score
Faith Edwards. The Lakers would take a 5-4 lead later in the inning off a Lewis error. Lewis would quickly tie the game at five in the sixth inning and would score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
Liv Regenfuss batted 2-2 in game two with a walk and RBI.
Elizabeth Wesoloski went 2-4 at the plate with a double and RBI.
Kylee Hoebeke and
Jenna Ballard each notched an RBI double, while
Eliana Eiland added a triple and scored a run.
GVSU will open their GLIAC home schedule this weekend. The Lakers will face Davenport on Saturday, March 28
th at 1:00 PM and Ferris State on Sunday, March 29
th at 1:00 PM. Both doubleheaders will be streamed live on FloCollege.
