MARION, Ind. – Grand Valley State track and field closed out their outdoor season opener this afternoon in Marion, Ind. Several Lakers competed across the two days of Indiana Wesleyan's Polar Bear Classic, with a handful recording personal-best marks.

Will Gaston,
Prentice Gardner Jr. and
Andrew Berryhill recorded personal-bests on day one of competition that landed them a spot in Grand Valley State's top 10 record book. Gaston took first in javelin, throwing for 58.75 (192-9) on his first attempt to move to No. 3 in program history. Gardner Jr. was next, placing second in triple jump with a personal-best 14.07m (46-2) on his first attempt, becoming the ninth-best in program history. Berryhill was the final Laker of the day to land a spot in program history. Winning the shot put invite event with a 17.95m (58-10.75) launch, Berryhill ranks eighth all-time.
Day two saw several more personal-best marks, especially by Lakers making their outdoor collegiate debut. Two marks from fresh GVSU faces found their way into the record books this afternoon.
West Liberty transfer and current dual-sport athlete
Isaac Tavo debuted in Laker blue this afternoon in discus. The redshirt-sophomore threw a massive 55.49m (182-1) in the invite, outthrowing his second place opponent by nearly 15 feet. His event-winning throw ranks him fifth in program history.
True freshman
Jason Hamilton II landed a spot in the record books, as well, running 21.19 in the men's 200m to not only win the event, but to also rank eighth in program history.
The Lakers are back on the road next weekend as they split their time across three separate meets. The earliest of the three is North Carolina State's Raleigh Relays, beginning on Thursday, March 26 through Saturday, March 28. The remaining two meets are just one day; Cincinnati's Oliver Nikoloff Invitational (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Emporia State's ESU Relays (Emporia, Ks.) are slated for Saturday, March 28.
