Lakers Drop Home Opener

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team began their home schedule Friday evening, hosting Ashland. After a competitive game through three quarters, the Eagles pulled away in the fourth to win 19-11.
 
The two teams played to a tie after the first period, each scoring four times. Ashland had a big second quarter, outscoring GVSU 6-1 in the period to go up 10-5 at the half. GVSU battled back in the third, using a 5-1 third quarter to get within one heading to the final period. However, Ashland would respond with eight goals in the final period to put it away.
 
 Delaney Smith led the offense with a hat trick, while adding three groundballs and an assist. Gracie Bancroft and Leah Leonard each scored twice. Ella Boose, Emerson Holthouser, Kendra Swope, and Veronica Ziemer each netted one goal apiece. Leonard also had an assist.
 
Sarah Krause made eight saves in the cage for GVSU. Kylie Waeghe tallied three groundballs to eclipse 100 in her Laker career. She also caused three turnovers.
 
Up Next
The Lakers will hit the road this Sunday, traveling to Missouri Western State for a 1:00 matchup.
