ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Grand Valley State softball team opened up the 2026 season with a 4-1 win over Missouri S&T and a 7-2 loss against Concordia – St. Paul Thursday (Feb. 19) night at the Lewis Dome Tournament.
Game One vs Missouri S&T – W, 4-1
GVSU got off to a fast start, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning off a
Jenna Ballard double to center field that scored
Madelynn Pope. In the second inning,
Carsyn Segorski doubled to left field that brought home
Kylee Hoebeke to make it 2-0 GVSU. Missouri S&T cut the Laker lead in half with a run in the bottom of the third inning. The Lakers added two insurance runs in the sixth inning off back-to-back RBI singles by Hoebeke and Eiliana Eiland. Hoebeke notched her first collegiate RBI that gave the Lakers a 3-1 lead followed by the RBI single by Eiland to make it 4-1.
Karli Dorr picked up the win in the circle after tossing all seven innings allowing just one run off five hits with six strikeouts.
Grace Usher batted 2-3 with a double.
Eliana Eiland went 2-2 at the plate with an RBI, while
Kylee Hoebeke went 2-3 with a run scored and RBI.
Carsyn Segorski added an RBI double while
Camryn Hall and Mdelynn Pope each notched a hit and run scored.
Game Two vs Concordia – St. Paul – L, 7-2
GVSU got out to an early lead in game two in the first inning on a
Grace Usher RBI single that scored
Eliana Eiland. Concordia – St. Paul brought across three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. GVSU answered in the fourth inning to make it a one-run game after
Jenna Ballard scored off a Concordia – St. Paul error. CSP would pull away with a four-run sixth inning to take a 7-2 lead.
Eliana Eiland and
Madelynn Pope each went 2-4 at the plate while Eiland added a run scored.
Kylie Swierkos got the start in the circle and suffered the loss after tossing 5.1 innings allowing four earned runs with one strikeout.
Lainey Cannon tossed 0.2 scoreless innings of relief.
GVSU will be back for a pair of games at the Lewis Dome Tournament tomorrow, February 20
th. The Lakers will face St. Cloud State at 11:00 AM ET and Truman State at 4:30 PM ET.
