October Begins With Two Big Matches For #16 Laker Volleyball

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The 16th-ranked Grand Valley State women's volleyball team begins October with two big GLIAC matches. They host Wayne State on Friday, before traveling to Ferris State on Saturday.

Last weekend, GVSU defeated both Davenport and Northern Michigan. The DU match went four sets, with the Panthers taking the first set, but the Lakers bounced back to take the next three. In Saturday's match against the Wildcats, GVSU took home the sweep, winning 27-25, 25-19, and 25-19. Finley Arp totaled 25 kills over the weekend, while Paige Sanders added 21 kills. Kennedy Arp had 16 kills and 12 blocks, while Gabby Orlet dished out 74 assists, and Lexi Armstrong had 44 digs. The two victories moved GVSU to 12-2 this season and 6-0 in league play, entering October on a six-game winning streak.  
 
October will start with a home match against Wayne State. The Warriors have won two of their past three games, their first two wins in GLIAC play, moving them to 6-8 on the season and 2-4 in league play. WSU is led offensively by three players who have totaled over 125 kills this season, each having more than 2.4 kills per set. Setter Kayla Dulgar is third in the conference with 578 assists and Katerina Stout continues to be one of the better middle hitters in the league, generating just under one block per set, while hitting .333.
 
The Lakers and Warriors met in the opening weekend of GLIAC play, facing off in Detroit. GVSU came away with a three-set victory, winning 25-23, 25-15, and 25-16. Finley Arp led the way with 11 kills, with Brianna Stawski adding nine. Gabby Orlet had 28 assists and 10 digs, while Lexi Armstrong recorded 15 digs. Wayne State hit just .095, compared to GVSU swinging .356.
 
Ferris State is the top-ranked team in the country, starting the weekend 14-0, having only dropped two sets all season. They lead the conference in a multitude of categories, and rank in the top 10 nationally in hitting percentage, kills per set, and assists per set. On the individual side, outside hitter Gabby Piazza ranks fifth nationally in points per set (4.99) and sixth in kills per set (4.36). Setter Hayley Wegener is fifth in the country distributing 11.02 assists per set. The Bulldogs are 14-0 overall and 6-0 in the conference, one of two undefeated teams in the country. The Lakers and Bulldogs played three times last season, with GVSU winning both regular season matchups, then Ferris State won the GLIAC Tournament semifinal game.
