Lakers Back Home vs Wayne State and Purdue Northwest

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team returns home for the first time in 2026 for a pair of GLIAC games this weekend. The Lakers will host Wayne State on Thursday, January 8th at 7:30 PM and Purdue Northwest on Saturday, January 10th at 3:00 PM.

GVSU started 2026 on the road against Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. The Lakers started the road trip with a huge 79-75 win against the #5 Huskies in Houghton before falling to Northern Michigan 72-60. GVSU is 9-3 on the season and 2-2 in the GLIAC. The Lakers are scoring 78 points on 44% shooting from the floor. GVSU ranks second in the conference forcing 15.8 turnovers and lead the GLIAC swiping 10.8 steals. 
 
Jalen Chairty scored a career high 22 points in the win at #5 Michigan Tech. Charity is second on the team in scoring averaging 13.3 points and five rebounds on 48% shooting from the field and 85% shooting from the free throw line. Ethan Alderink leads the Lakers in scoring averaging 13.7 points and 4.5 rebounds on 48% shooting from the field and 48% shooting from three. Trevor Smith Jr. is scoring 12.3 points and is second on the team with 29 assists and 16 steals. Mason Docks leads the GLIAC with 36 steals and is second averaging 3.8 assists. 
 
Wayne State is 5-5 on the season and 2-2 in the GLIAC. The Warriors fell to Saginaw Valley State 65-62 before defeating Lake Superior State 77-71 last week. Wayne State is third in the GLIAC in scoring averaging 80 points on 46% shooting from the field. Jordan Briggs leads the Warriors in scoring and is tied for third in the GLIAC averaging 17.9 points on 47% shooting from the field and 37% shooting from three. Briggs leads his team with 32 assists and 16 steals. Carlos Paul III is averaging 12.2 points and 4.4 rebounds on 50% shooting from the floor. Jotham Nweke has notched 10.5 points and a team leading 5.1 rebounds and nine blocks.
 
Purdue Northwest is 6-5 on the season and 2-2 in the GLIAC. The Pride fell 85-68 at Lake Superior State before defeating Saginaw Valley State 71-63 last week. Purdue Northwest is averaging 76 points on 45% shooting from the field and 39% from three. Kyle Ross leads PNW in scoring with 15.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 32 assists on 60% shooting from the field. Kevin Taylor has notched 11.9 points and 5.5 rebounds on 47% shooting from the field and 41% from three-point range. Kwat Abdelkarim has added 10 points on 46% shooting from the floor.
