Lakers Host Davenport in Crosstown Showdown Thursday

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team is back home on Thursday, January 15th when they host Davenport in the crosstown showdown. Tipoff is set for 7:30 PM at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.

GVSU is 11-3 on the season and 4-2 in the GLIAC. The Lakers claimed an 81-72 win against Wayne State and a 76-54 win against Purdue Northwest. GVSU has won four out of their last five games including a road win at #5 Michigan Tech to begin the 2026 calendar year. The Lakers are scoring 79 points per game this season on 44% shooting from the field. GVSU ranks second in the GLIAC forcing over 15 turnovers per game and committing just 10 turnovers a game. 
 
Redshirt junior Shamus Thompson was named the GLIAC defensive player of the week for the first time in his career. Thompson posted his first career double-double in the win against Purdue Northwest with 11 points and a career high 15 rebounds, while also adding three blocks and a steal. In the win against Wayne State, Thompson grabbed a game high seven rebounds and added one block and a steal.
 
Graduate Ethan Alderink leads GVSU in scoring averaging 14.6 points and 4.8 rebounds on 48% shooting from the floor and 46% shooting from three. Alderink scored a game high 24 points last game against Purdue Northwest and added 15 points against Wayne State. Trevor Smith Jr. is scoring 12.4 points on 54.5% shooting from the field and 39% from three-point range. Jalen Charity has notched 12.1 points and five rebounds on 44% shooting from the field and 85% from the free throw line. Mason Docks leads the GLIAC swiping 41 steals and leads GVSU with 50 assists.
 
Davenport is 9-5 on the season and 3-3 in the GLIAC. The Panthers defeated Purdue Northwest 77-74 before falling to Wayne State 80-66 last weekend at home. Davenport is scoring 78.9 points on 45% shooting from the field. Ken Walker leads the GLIAC in scoring averaging 22.1 points on 42% shooting from the field and 90% shooting from the free throw line. Walker scored a career high 38 points in the win against Purdue Northwest. Dylan Smith is averaging 11.4 points and a GLIAC leading 8.1 rebounds. Alden Ritt ranks second in the GLIAC with eight rebounds while scoring 10.9 points on 48% shooting from the field.
