ASHLAND, Ohio – The Grand Valley State women's soccer kicked off the 2025 season and the
Katelyn Longino era with a 1-0 win at No. 16 Ashland Thursday (Sept. 4) night. The Lakers begin the season 1-0, while Ashland falls to 0-1.
The two teams played to a scoreless first half. GVSU outshot Ashland 8-1 and 4-0 on goal in the first half. Corner kicks were even at 2-2 in the second half. In the second half, GVSU scored the go-ahead goal in the 79
th minute off the foot of
Sarah Fromm.
Kendall Aikens played a ball into the middle of the box that deflected off a Laker and went right to Fromm who put it in for the lone goal of the game.
GVSU would hold Ashland to zero shots on goal to claim the 1-0 win. GVSU outshot the Eagles 12-3 and 7-0 on goal. Ashland held a 6-4 corner kick advantage.
Alli French and
Kendall Aikens each led the Lakers with three shots.
Sonya Mehta notched two shots on goal. Fromm scored the game-winning goal while
Ivy Wilhelm picked up the assist for her first collegiate point. Defenders
Mackenzie Ford and
Acadia Murphy played all 90 minutes in the win. Goalkeeper
Sara Csernyik got the start in goal for the Lakers.
GVSU will close out the opening weekend on Saturday, September 6
th when they travel to take on Cedarville. First kick is set for 2:30 PM in Cedarville, Ohio. The game will be streamed live on FloCollege.
