CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The No. 5 Grand Valley State women's soccer team closed out the opening weekend of the 2025 season with a 3-2 road win against Cedarville Saturday (Sept. 6) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 2-0, while Cedarville falls to 1-1.
Cedarville opened up the scoring in the second minute to take an early 1-0 lead off a penalty kick. The Lakers would tie the game in the 17
th minute off the foot of
Sarah Fromm. Cedarville turned the ball over as Fromm would beat the goalkeeper to the ball and kicked it off the left post and in for her second goal of the season. Cedarville would retake the lead in the 32
nd minute off a free kick to go ahead 2-1.
In the second half, GVSU found the equalizer in the 49
th minute to tie the game at 2-2. The Lakers were hit the crossbar twice and Cedarville attempted to clear but the ball went right to
Mackenzie Ford who delivered a strike from the top of the 18 box that went past the goalkeeper's hands at the top of the goal for her first career goal.
GVSU would take their first lead of the game at 3-2 in the 80
th minute.
Cora Conley played a ball to Fromm just inside 18 box. Fromm turned and kicked it off the crossbar and in for her second goal of the game and third of the season. Conley picked up her first assist of the season and first collegiate point. Cedarville would get one shot that sailed high in the final 10 minutes as GVSU would hang on for the one goal win.
GVSU outshot Cedarville 12-7 and 6-4 on target. The Lakers had four corner kicks and held the Yellow Jackets to just one. Fromm notched her second game winning goal of the season, while scoring two goals on two shots in 59 minutes.
Alli French led GVSU with three shots with one on target.
Mackenzie Ford notched her first career goal and played in all 90 minutes.
Vesna Dennison added two shots in 53 minutes played in the win.
The Lakers will open their home schedule next weekend when they host a pair of ranked teams. GVSU will take on Minnesota State in the home opener on Friday, September 12
th at 7:00 PM and Central Missouri on Sunday, September 14
th at 12:00 PM. Both games will be streamed live on FloCollege.
