Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#3 Lakers Shutout Michigan Tech 4-0 Sunday

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The No. 3 Grand Valley State women's soccer team concluded their road trip with a 4-0 shutout win at Michigan Tech Sunday (Sept. 28) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the GLIAC, while the Huskies fall to 1-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the GLIAC.
 
GVSU opened the scoring in the 22nd minute from the foot of Alli French. Sonya Mehta sent a ball for French to run down; French beat the defender to the ball and fired a shot with the right foot that went past the diving goalkeeper for her third goal of the season. The Lakers dominated the first half outshooting Michigan Tech 16-2 as they took a 1-0 lead into the break.
 
In the second half, the Lakers would double the lead in the 67th minute on a header by Amanda Palmer. Sophia Morgan sent a ball into the box towards the left post for Palmer who jumped and headed the ball into the back of the net. That goal was Palmer's first of the season as Morgan dished out her second assist of the season. 
 
GVSU would add two goals in the three minutes to put the finishing touches on the win. Sonya Mehta made it 3-0 in the 87th minute for her second goal of the season with the assist by Ivy Wilhelm. Two minutes later, Kacy Lauer added the fourth goal for GVSU for her second of the season. Morgan sent a ball towards the back left post that deflected and went right to Lauer who had a wide-open net. 
 
GVSU dominated the Huskies with a 34-3 shot advantage and 13-1 on target. The Lakers produced seven corner kicks and did not allow a corner kick to Michigan Tech. Alli French scored the game winning goal and posted three shots. Sonya Mehta notched a goal and assist and led GVSU with seven shots with three on target. Sophia Morgan dished out two assists, while Sarah Fromm and Ivy Wilhelm each dished out an assist. Acadia Murphy and Mackenzie Ford played all 90 minutes in the win. Macie Hunter got the start in goal and posted her third consecutive shutout making one save. 
 
GVSU will return home next weekend when they host Parkside on Friday, October 3rd. First kick is set for 5:00 PM at the GVSU Soccer Field. The game will be streamed live on FloCollege. Visit gvsulakers.com for links to live video and live stats.
