UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. = The No. 4 Grand Valley State women's soccer team opened up their conference schedule with a 2-0 shutout victory at Saginaw Valley State Friday (Sept. 19) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Cardinals fall to 2-2-1.
GVSU opened the scoring early in the sixth minute off the foot of
Alli French.
Sonya Mehta placed a ball from the right side into the box that snuck past a Laker and a Cardinal defender as French would be in great position by the back post to kick it in for her second goal of the season.
The Lakers would take the 1-0 lead into halftime as they would dominate 7-1 in shots and 4-0 in shots on goal through the first 45 minutes. In the second half, GVSU would double the lead in the 51
st minute to make it 2-0.
Cora Conley made a beautiful pass to Mehta who was able to get a shot off from the middle of the box that went in the top right corner of the goal. Mehta scored her first career goal as a Laker, while Conley picked up her team leading third assist of the season.
GVSU would hold Saginaw Valley State to just three shot attempts in the second half with no shots being on target. The Lakers outshot the Cardinals 12-3 and 9-0 on goal. Both teams produced five corner kicks.
Mehta netted a goal and assist for three points in the game. French scored her second goal of the season and first game-winning goal on two shots.
Sarah Fromm led GVSU with three shots with two on target. Conley added two shots on goal and dished out an assist.
Macie Hunter got the start in goal and recorded her first shutout of her collegiate career.
GVSU will be back in action next weekend when they travel to the Upper Peninsula for a pair of GLIAC games. The Lakers will take on Northern Michigan on Friday, September 26
th at 1:00 PM and Michigan Tech on Sunday, September 28
th at 12:00 PM. Both games will be streamed live on FloCollege.
