ALLENDALE – The No. 4 Grand Valley State women's soccer team defeated No. 17 Central Missouri 2-1 Sunday (Sept. 14) afternoon at the GVSU Soccer Field. The Lakers improve to 3-1 on the season, while Central Missouri falls to 1-2-1.
Central Missouri opened up the scoring in the third minute to take an early lead. GVSU outshot Central Missouri 11-6 in the first half, but did not find the equalizer as the Jennies went into the break with a one goal lead.
In the second half, GVSU dominated most of the possession. The Lakers would tie the game at one in the 54
thminute.
Alli French stole the ball from the Central Missouri defender and kicked it past the goalkeeper at the bottom left corner of the goal for her first goal of the season.
GVSU would take their first lead of the game in the 64
th minute off the foot of
Ivy Wilhelm.
Cora Conley made a great pass to Wilhelm at the top of the box. Wilhelm made a move to get space from the defender and fired a shot at the bottom left corner of the goal that hit the inside of the post and went in. Wilhelm notched her first collegiate goal, while Conley dished out her second assist of the season.
GVSU would hang on for the one goal win as they outshot Central Missouri 19-7 and 8-4 shots on goal. The Lakers produced 11 corner kicks and held the Jennies to two.
Wilhelm scored the game-winning goal and led the Lakers with four shots.
Sarah Fromm and
Amanda Palmer each recorded three shots, while
Alli French and
Cora Conley each added two.
Acadia Murphy,
Kacy Lauer, and
Mackenzie Ford played all 90 minutes.
Sara Csernyik got the start in goal and made two saves.
Macie Hunter was in net for the Lakers in the second half and picked up her first career win making one save.
GVSU will begin conference play next week Friday, September 19
th when they travel to Saginaw Valley State. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM in University Center, Michigan. The game will be streamed live on FloSports.
