#3 GVSU Claims 45-9 Season-Opening Win Over Lincoln (Pa.)

GVSU Postgame Press Conference 

#3 Grand Valley State claimed a 45-9 victory over Lincoln (Pa.) in the 2025 season and home opener before a Labor Day weekend crowd of 12,136. GVSU improved to 35-19 overall in season openers and 21-3 since 2001. The Lakers will host Black Hills State next Saturday at 7 p.m. in Lubbers Stadium. 
 
The GVSU defense provided the first big play of the season as safety Josh Anderson picked off a pass on the fifth play of the game. The offense, under the direction of redshirt freshman quarterback Andrew Schuster, drove 75 yards in five plays for the first touchdown of the year. Senior RB Syone Usma-Harper rushed four times for 64 yards and Schuster hit junior WR Lynn Wyche-El with an 11-yard touchdown pass and sophomore place kicker Mathew Bacik added the PAT for a 7-0 lead. Schuster hit junior WR Kellen Reed with a 45-yard touchdown pass on the Lakers' next possession to complete a 3-play, 61-yard drive. Lincoln scored a touchdown with the help of a Laker defensive penalty that kept the drive alive, but midway through the second quarter GVSU produced a 4-play, 67-yard touchdown drive. Schuster hit WR Sean Byrd with 33-yard completion and Usma-Harper capped the drive with an 18-yard TD run to up the Laker lead to 21-6. 

Sophomore quarterback Brady Drogosh engineered a 6-play, 61-yard scoring drive on the Lakers' first possession of the second half. Drogosh toted the ball four times for 31 yards and sophomore running back Paschal Jolman concluded the drive with an 18-yard touchdown run. Schuster hit junior WR Donovan Johnson with a 30-yard touchdown pass to complete a 6-play, 80-yard scoring drive. Drogosh rambled in from four yards out after junior RB Derrick Woods toted the ball five times for 47 yards. 
Bacik added the final points with a 42-yard field goal.

The GVSU offense produced 481 total yards, 230 on the ground and 251 through the air. Schuster was 17-for-21 for 251 yards and three touchdowns in his first collegiate start. Reed caught four passes for 85 yards and a touchdown, followed by Donovan Joshnson's four catches for 56 yards and a TD. Wyche-El hauled in four catches for 34 yards and a touchdown. Usma-Harper toted the ball seven times for 83 yards and a TD, while Woods added 47 yards on six carries. Drogosh chipped in eight carries for 31 yards and a TD.
 
GVSU limited Lincoln to 17 rushing yards on 24 attempts and 16-of-28 passing for 179 yards and three interceptions. Senior LB Jimmy Downs led the defense with eight tackles, 2.0 TFL (-8) and 1.0 QB sacks (-6). FS Quinn Wills, DE Jarie Buddin and LB Anthony Cardamone each added four tackles. SS Josh Anderson, FS Matthew Nickens and CB Trey Sharp each picked off a pass.
