The day began bright and early, as the men's decathlon featuring Mason Floria kicked off at 9 a.m. He had remaining five events: the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m. He snatched first with a 15.52 finish in the 110m hurdles and added 788 points to yesterday's score of 3410. He continued to dominate in discus, also placing first with a throw of 29.32m (96-02) for 451 more points. Floria shined in pole vault, clearing a personal-best 4.30m (14-1.25) height to, you guessed it, rank first in the event and add 702 points to his score. He closed out the day with 795 more points, including his personal-best 5:14.50 finish in the 1500m that added 479 points. Floria ended the day with a personal-best 6146 points – the second-best score in GVSU program history.

The first events to follow Floria were the men's hammer, long jump and pole vault, as well as the men's and women's 1500m preliminaries.

The first three men's field events saw six podium finishes from Grand Valley State. Michael Griffey grabbed first in men's hammer throw with a personal-best 64.42m (211-04) mark, ranking fourth in NCAA Division II. Lucas Lesher's 57.45m (188-06) mark earned him a bronze medal in the event.

Luke Jelderks and Caleb Taylor were the next two to find a spot on the podium in long jump. Jelderks had a near personal-best mark of 7.48m (24-6.50), earning him the title of GLIAC Champion and tying him for 10th in Division II. Taylor earned silver with a personal-best 7.32m (24-0.25), placing him sixth in program history. Dylan LaFontsee also competed in long jump, ranking fourth with a mark of 7.10m (23-3.50).

Pole vault rounded out the first three men's events with two podium finishes and one fifth place ranking. Dolan Gonzales placed first with a personal-best 5.19m (17-0.25) mark. Colton Emeott grabbed one-third of a second-place finish, tying two others with a mark of 4.77m (15-7.75). Camryn Battjes also cleared a height of 4.77m (15-7.75) but placed fifth on the count back.

Nearly every individual in Grand Valley gear who raced in the preliminary running events advanced to the finals, slated for tomorrow. For a list of which GVSU athletes will be competing in the finals rounds tomorrow, follow this link.

Notable performances in the preliminary events included Destini Dorkins's 13.91 personal-best time in the 100m hurdles, Dominic Downes's 14.27 personal-best and Ethan Smith's 14.37 season-best in the 110m hurdles; Trannon Aylor's 48.66 season-best finish in the 400m; Kate Aniolkowski's personal-best finish at 1:03.70 and Lance Riddle's personal-best finish at 52.54 in the 400m hurdles, and personal-best performances by Jayla Graham (24.62) and Myles Rhodes (20.61) in the 200m.

The next of the field events to take place were women's hammer, men's high jump and javelin and women's long jump.

The women's hammer podium was swept by Grand Valley State athletes. Shelby Ulven, once again, took the crown with a throw of 56.40m (185-00). Next to take a medal was Alaina Omonode, who placed second with a mark at 54.24m (177-11). Sophia Snellenberger filled out the podium with a personal-best 48.01m (157-06) hammer throw.

Men's high jumpers Braden Prielipp and Caleb Taylor added four points to Grand Valley State's team score. Prielipp cleared a 1.95m (6-4.75) height, placing sixth to add three points. In his season opener, Taylor cleared 1.90m (6-2.75), ranking seventh and increasing the team score by one.

Just one Laker competed in javelin, and in true GVSU fashion, he took first place in the event, complete with a personal-best mark. Will Gaston added 10 points to the team score with a mark of 58.48m (191-10), moving up to number five in program history.

Alaina Diaz shocked the DII nation with her long jump mark. A new personal-best, school record and NCAA Division II leader. Diaz recorded a 6.41m (21-0.5) mark on her second attempt to, unsurprisingly, place first in the event. Zoe Zeiser added points to the team score, as well, placing eighth with a mark of 5.47m (17-11.5).

The only two non-preliminary running events of the day were the 3000m steeplechase and the 10000m.

Maria Mitchell and Jordyn Hopgood competed in the women's steeplechase. Mitchell won gold with a finish at 10:28.56 and Hopgood finished fifth at 11:06.46. Owen Westerkamp and Drennan Akins represented the men in the event and on the podium. Westerkamp placed first with a finish at 9:03.57 and Akins stole second at 9:17.24.

Madison Ebright was the sole Laker in the women's 10000m. She recorded a second-place finish at 35:47.28. Brock Wooderson and Dan Lambert both ran for the men in the event. The duo placed fifth and seventh at 31:39.90 and 31:54.29, respectively.
