Lakers Dominate Northwood 9-1 Tuesday

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State baseball team picked up an in-region win over Northwood Tuesday (April 29) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 36-10 on the season.
 
GVSU scored nine runs off 15 hits while Northwood was held to one run off seven hits. Evan Morrison batted 3-4 with a double, two runs scored, and RBI. Caleb Estrada hit 3-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Brendan Guciardo went 3-4 at the plate with a run scored. Ayden VanEnkevort hit 2-3 with an RBI and runs scored, while Jovan Gill added a two-run double with one run scored. 
 
GVSU got off to a fast start scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Morrison leadoff the inning with a single to center field. Two batters later, Gill doubled down the right field line to score Morrison from first base. Next batter, Jonas Gulbrandsen drove home Gill with an RBI groundout to second base.
 
The Lakers scored four runs in the third inning after the first two batters were retired. Ryan Simac walked with the bases loaded to make it 3-0 GVSU. Next batter, Estrada singled up the middle to bring home VanEnkevort and Caden Thelen. Morrison made it 6-0 with a bunt single that scored Stimac.
 
Northwood scored their only run in the fourth inning on an RBI double to left field. GVSU answered with one run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly and two runs in the eighth Ryan Dykstra singled up the middle to score Estrada followed by a sacrifice fly by Gill to make it 9-1.
 
Gill got the start on the mound tossing four innings allowing one run two hits with one strikeout. Zach Warren tossed 2.1 innings of relief and earned the win allowing no runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Will Goebel earned his fifth save of the season after getting the final eight outs of the game striking out one Northwood batter.
 
GVSU will close the regular season this week when they travel to Peru, Illinois for a neutral site series against Upper Iowa. The Lakers will face the Peacocks for nine inning game on Thursday, Mat 1st at 7:00 PM followed by a doubleheader on Friday, May 2nd at 2:00 PM.
