Track & Field Closes Out Competition at South Florida, Ball State

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Laker track and field closed out another weekend on the road this evening with competition at the South Florida Invitational (Tampa, Fla.) and the Ball State We Fly Challenge (Muncie, Ind.). Grand Valley State competed Friday and Saturday at both meets.

Grand Valley's men competed at the South Florida Invitational on Friday in hammer throw, long jump, pole vault, shot put, high jump and discus. Other Lakers competed at Ball State in women's high jump and men's javelin. Several recorded personal-or-season-bests on Friday.
 
Wyatt Alwine and Camryn Battjes recorded season-bests in pole vault, recording respective marks of 5.11m (16-9.25) and 4.86m (15-11.25). Andrew Berryhill threw for a personal-best 17.50m (57-5) in shot put, ranking as the eighth-best in Grand Valley State history. Lauren Rokos recorded a personal-best, as well, clearing a height of 1.55m (5-1) in women's high jump.
 
Saturday's events were filled with both track and field events and a lot of competition. Grand Valley competed in 17 events in Muncie – three in field and 14 on the track.
 
Ball State's events saw several Lakers record best marks, as well. Caleb Taylor tied his outdoor-best in long jump with a 7.14m (23-5) mark, as did Dylan LaFontsee with a 6.84m (22-5.25) jump.
 
On the track, Lakers recorded 18 new season or personal-best marks. Josh Hurt was the first to record a personal-best with a 14.20 finish in the 110m hurdles. The time ranks him fifth in Grand Valley program history. Multi athlete Mason Floria recorded a personal-best in the event, as well, finishing at 15.16. Destini Dorkins finished the women's 100m hurdles at a personal-best 14.29, updating her previous best (14.35) that she had set just one week ago.
 
In the 400m, Elija Strong finished at a personal-best 49.09 and Trannon Aylor recorded his own at 49.42. The 400m hurdles saw season-bests from Lance Riddle (54.58) and Ashtyn Gluck (1:03.05), and personal-bests from Destini Dorkins (1:01.76), Kate Aniolkowski (1:04.79) and Kennedy Gardner (1:08.06).
 
Myles Rhodes shattered yet another personal-best, this time in the 200m. He updated his previous record (set this season) with a finish at 20.86, ranking him third in Grand Valley State program history. Nick Walper recorded a season-best in the event with a 21.53 finish, Demarcus Chapa finished at a personal-best 21.81, Elija Strong recorded a personal-best finish at 22.29 and Trannon Aylor crossed the finish line at a personal-best 22.39.
 
The women recorded bests of their own. Catherine Guckenberger updated her week-old PR with a finish at 24.19 and Melia Williams snagged a personal-best time at 25.23.
 
The men's and women's 4x400m relay squads closed out the BSU – We Fly Challenge. The men's squad of Zach Pray, Dominik Balenda, Desmond Chapa and Myles Rhodes finished at 3:10.07, the third-fastest time in GVSU history. The women's team ranked third in program history, too. Catherine Guckenberger, Claire Neumann, Addison Washler and Alaina Diaz crossed the finish line at 3:39.80.
 
The South Florida Invitational hosted the Laker ladies Saturday afternoon. Grand Valley competed in hammer throw, pole vault, shot put, high jump and discus. Freshman Brooke Bowers set yet another personal-best, clearing a height of 4.30m (14-1.25) to rank third at the meet and second in GVSU program history. Maggie Stevenson recorded a season-best throw in discus, ranking third in the event with a 52.95m (173-8) mark.

Grand Valley State track and field splits up this coming week. Several athletes will compete in California at the Bryan Clay Invite (Azusa, Calif.) and Mt. SAC Relays (Walnut, Calif.) while others stay home for the annual GVSU Al Owens Classic. More information regarding each meet will be posted to gvsulakers.com in the near future.
