ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's basketball team advanced to the GLIAC Tournament Championship for the fourth straight year, defeating Wayne State 78-54 in Saturday's semifinal matchup. The Lakers move on to play Ferris State in the championship game tomorrow at 3:00.
The Warriors got out to a 7-0 run to begin the game, but the Lakers answered back with six straight, started by a three from
Abrie Cabana. Wayne State again went on a run, this one a 6-0 scoring streak, making it 13-6. GVSU went on a 9-2 run to close out the quarter, getting a three from
Avery Zeinstra to tie the game at 15 headed to the second.
MacKenzie Bisballe got the second quarter started with five straight points, igniting an 11-1 run that brough the Laker lead to 26-16. Following a Warrior basket,
Nicole Kamin buried a three to start a 12-4 run to end the half, that ended with Kamin and
Ellie Droste hitting consecutive threes, putting the Lakers up 38-22 at the break.
Two straight jumpers from
Abrie Cabana put the Lakers up by 20 points early in the second half. It would grow as high as 24 in the quarter following a layup from Kamin, making it 50-26, but ultimately ended at 23, with the Lakers up 59-36 with one quarter to play.
With the Lakers up 63-42, Kamin got a breakaway layup, then hit a three the following possession to give herself a new career-high with 24 points. The two teams traded baskets down the stretch, allowing the Lakers to handily close out the Warriors and advance to tomorrow's championship game.
Nicole Kamin had a monster game. She tallied a career-high 24 points, shooting 9-13 from the floor and 4-5 from three. The junior added six boards, five steals, and two blocks.
Paige Vanstee scored 10 points and had three steals.
Rylie Bisballe totaled nine points, six rebounds, and four assists. The Lakers forced 28 turnovers, generating 19 steals, scoring 26 points off those turnovers.
