ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State softball team opened up their home schedule with a doubleheader sweep against Purdue Northwest Wednesday (March 26) afternoon. The Lakers won game one 12-0 in five innings and game two 8-2 to improve to 13-15 on the season and 4-2 in the GLIAC.
Game One – W, 12-0 (5-Innings)
GVSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off an RBI single up the middle by
Karli Dorr to score
Faith Edwards. The Lakers would double the lead at 2-0 in the second inning off a
Madelynn Pope home run to center field. That home run was Pope's first collegiate career home run.
Elizabeth Wesoloski would make it 4-0 in the third inning with a 2-RBI double to left center to score
Eliana Eiland and Dorr.
The Lakers would explode for eight runs in the fourth inning to take a 12-run lead.
Allyson Theunick notched an RBI on a fielder's choice to score Pope from third. Eiland singled up the middle with the bases loaded to score
Carsyn Segorski and Theunick. Later in the inning,
Morgan Spicer walked with the bases loaded to make it 8-0. Next batter, Pope cleared the bases with a triple to right center and would score on the play off a Purdue Northwest error to make it 12-0. Purdue Northwest would not bring across any runs in the fifth as GVSU would claim the mercy rule win.
Madelynn Pope led the Lakers hitting 3-3 with a home run triple, four runs batted in, and three runs scored.
Eliana Eiland went 2-3 at the plate with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
Karli Dorr batted 2-2 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Faith Edwards added a hit with two runs scored. Dorr got the start in the circle and earned the win after tossing all five innings allowing no runs off three hits with three strikeouts.
Game Two – W, 8-2
Purdue Northwest opened the scoring in the second innings on a two-run home run to left field to take an early lead. GVSU answered in the bottom half of the second inning to tie the game at two.
Carsyn Segorski smoked a double to right center to score
Erin Newman and
Morgan Spicer.
Segorski would give the Lakers the lead in the fourth inning with another double to right center to score
Madelynn Pope from first base. GVSU would add to the lead in the inning off an RBI double to right center by
Faith Edwards to score Segorski to make it 4-2. Two batters later,
Grace Usher doubled to right center to bring home Edwards and
Eliana Eiland to make it 6-2 GVSU.
The Lakers would add two more runs in the fifth inning to go up 8-2.
Morgan Spicer doubled to right center which brough home
Elizabeth Wesoloski. Later in the inning, Edwards singled up the middle to score Spicer from third base.
Nevaeh Ingram got the start in the circle and earned the win after tossing all seven innigns allowing two runs off six hits with four strikeouts.
Faith Edwards batted 3-4 with a double, two runs batted in, and a run scored.
Carsyn Segorski went 2-2 with two doubles, three runs batted in, and a run scored.
Morgan Spicer hit 2-3 with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI.
Eliana Eiland added two hits with a run scored.
The Lakers will be back in GLIAC action this weekend when they travel to face Davenport and Ferris State. GVSU will face Davenport on Saturday, March 29
th in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM and Ferris State on Sunday, March 30
