ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's basketball team got the NCAA Tournament underway with a dominant victory over Quincy. The team exploded for 63 first half points, finishing with over 100 in their 108-72 win. The Lakers advance to the Regional semifinals where they will face Wayne State.
GVSU began the game on a 10-0 run, getting six points from
Rylie Bisballe and four from
Nicole Kamin. The lead stayed at 10 at 21-11, then
Molly Anderson hit a three to start a 14-3 run to end the quarter. Kamin also hit a three in the run and
Abrie Cabana hit a jumper just before time expired to put GVSU up 35-14 after 10 minutes.
The two teams traded baskets for the first two minutes of the quarter, but a
Rylie Bisballe layup started a 16-0, getting consecutive triples from
Ellie Droste to wrap it up, making it 55-20 GVSU. The advantage got to as many as 36 in the first half, but settled at 32, 63-31 at the half.
A 9-4 Laker run to begin the second half, highlighted by a
Kathryn Schmidt three, brought the lead up to 72-35. The Lakers were doubling up the Hawks following a three-pointer from
Paige Vanstee, up 84-42 with 2:58 to go. Quincy would close the quarter on a 13-2 run, making it 86-55 going into the fourth.
Grand Valley State reached 100 points for the seventh time this season off a layup from
Sydney Cherney. Vanstee hit another triple and
Lexi Plitzuweit closed out the scoring with a layup.
Five Lakers scored in double-figures, led by
Rylie Bisballe's 17. She added seven rebounds and four assists.
Nicole Kamin scored 15 points and have seven boards, with
MacKenzie Bisballe scoring 14.
Ellie Droste and
Paige Vanstee each tallied 11 points.
Lexi Plitzuweit totaled eight points and six assists, while
Avery Zeinstra had eight points and six steals. The Lakers forced 25 turnovers and shot 60.3% from the field.
