ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Grand Valley State softball team fell in day two at the Lewis Dome tournament Friday (Feb.21) and move to 2-4 on the season. The Lakers dropped game one 7-6 to Truman State and 5-0 in game two against St. Cloud State.
Game One vs Truman State – L, 7-6
GVSU jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.
Eliana Eiland led off the game with a walk and stole second base during the next at bat. Two batters later,
Morgan Spicer tripled to center field which scored Eiland for the opening run of the game. Next batter,
Elizabeth Wesoloski scored Spicer on an RBI groundout.
Truman State quickly answered with a six-run bottom of the first inning to take a 6-2 lead. The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with an RBI single to cut the Laker lead in half. Next batter, Truman State launched a two-run home run to take a 3-2 lead. The Bulldogs would add four more hits to score their last three runs in the inning.
The Lakers would get a run back in the second inning to make it a 6-3 game.
MaryJane Goodman started the inning with a single to right field and advanced to third off a Truman State error.
Karli Dorr would score Goodman two batters later with an RBI groundout.
GVSU would tie the game at 6-6 with a three-run third inning. Eiland led off the inning with a single and advanced to third off a sacrifice bunt.
Morgan Spicer singled to center field to bring home Eiland for her second RBI of the game and to bring the deficit to two. After a Truman State error that put runners at first and second, Goodman singled to center field to score Spicer from second base and a Truman State error allowed
Grace Usher to score from first to tie the game at 6-6. Both teams would go scoreless for three innings. Truman State would lead off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single and would win the game off an RBI single to left field.
Eliana Eiland batted 3-3 with two runs scored, one walk, and one stolen base.
Morgan Spicer went 2-4 at the plate with a triple, two runs batted in, and two runs scored.
MaryJane Goodman hit 3-4 with a run scored and run batted in.
Karli Dorr and
Elizabeth Wesoloski each added an RBI.
Karli Dorr got the start in the circle and suffered the loss (1-1) after allowing six earned runs while striking out seven.
Game Two vs St. Cloud State – L, 5-0
St. Cloud State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning off an RBI single. The Huskies would make it 2-0 in the second inning off an RBI groundout. St. Cloud State would add two runs in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth inning to claim the 5-0 win.
Madelynn Pope led GVSU going 2-3 at the plate.
Morgan Spicer,
Elizabeth Wesoloski, and
Kylie Sinal each notched a hit for GVSU.
Christine Duch started in the circle for the Lakers and suffered the loss after tossing five innings striking out two batters.
Kylie Swierkos tossed one scoreless inning of relief.
GVSU will closeout the Lewis Dome Tournament with two games tomorrow. The Lakers will face Winona State at 10:00 AM ET / 9:00 AM CT and Lewis at 12:00 PM ET / 11:00 AM CT.
