ALLENDALE, Mich. – After two days, 84 schools, 169 teams, nearly 2,000 athletes and 3,301 entries, Grand Valley has officially closed out the 2025 Big Meet. At Saturday's Big Meet, the Lakers collected seven event wins, met 15 NCAA provisional standards and recorded at least 16 personal-bests.

Sprints/Hurdles
60m Dash –
Taylor Kyle,
Alaina Diaz,
Jayla Graham and
Melia Williams all ran in heat one of the women's 60m dash. Kyle led the Lakers with a third place, 7.67 finish. Diaz was just behind, finishing fourth at 7.75. Graham and Williams were the final two to cross the line, finishing sixth and eighth at 7.86 and 7.88 respectively.
Four guys represented GVSU throughout 11 total heats of the event.
Chrisly Kelly-Cannon ranked 11
th overall with a 7.03 finish time in heat two, outrunning Nick Walper's 19
th place 7.11 time. Although running in different heats,
Elija Strong and Demarcus Chapa both finished at 7.19 to rank 24
th and 25
th respectively.
60m Hurdles – Five women competed in the 60m hurdles for GVSU. The ladies took four of the top six spots and recorded one season-best.
Brooke Barkocy and
Destini Dorkins took the top two with times of 8.85 and 9.13.
Kennedy Gardner and
Hannah Hollister rounded out the top six with fifth and sixth place finishes at 9.36 and 9.38 respectively.
Leeyah Samuels finished further behind and recorded a season-best 9.65 time!
The men's squad saw two Lakers compete.
Ethan Smith finished fifth in his heat and overall at 8.50.
Tayshawn Bester recorded a personal-best time of 8.54, finishing second in heat two and ranking seventh overall.
200m –
Alaina Diaz was the star of the women's 200m, winning the event at a personal-best 24.39 time. Her finish granted her sole possession of the number three spot in GVSU program history.
Taylor Kyle finished third in heat one and ranked third overall with a season-best 25.43 finish.
Hannah Hollister closed out the event for the Laker ladies in heat six, finishing third in her heat and 21
st overall.
Demarcus Chapa was the only Laker to run in the men's 200m. He finished first in his heat and sixth overall, crossing the finish line at 22.27.
400m –
Claire Neumann,
Kate Aniolkowski and
Brooke Barkocy ran for the women in the 400m. Neumann took the event win with a finish time of 56.58.
Kate Aniolkowski finished fourth in heat five, crossing the finish line at 1:00.71.
Brooke Barkocy ran a personal-best 1:01.90 time to finish third in heat eight.
Zach Pray took the title in the men's event with a 47.82 finish.
Desmond Chapa was the next Laker to finish, ranking fifth overall at 49.11.
Elija Strong placed first in his heat, finishing at a personal-best 50.18.
Sam Allen closed out the event for the Lakers with a 12
th place finish at 50.24.
Distance – Grand Valley's distance squad was light today, only seeing three runners through three events.
1 Mile –
Landyn Howell and Gabe Connelly represented GVSU in the women's and men's 1 mile, both running in the first section of their respective events. Howell crossed the finish line fourth, recording a time of 4:59.75. Connelly finished seventh overall with a time of 4:18.30.
3000m – The women's 3000m was the first event of the day and
Cara Newman did her best to show what GVSU is made of. The freshman placed first in the event with a personal-best 9:50.33 time. She was the only Laker to run the 3k.
Relays
Distance Medley Relay (DMR) – Both squads shined in their DMR debuts this afternoon. The women kicked things off in heat one of the event.
Lauren Kiley took the first leg, running for 1200m before passing the baton to
Catherine Guckenberger. After 400m,
Maria Mitchell took over and ran the next 800m.
Natalie Graber closed out the final 1600m of competition at 11:18.80. The time goes down as the second-best DMR in GVSU program history.
Patrick Lyell led the men's debut in the DMR, running the first 1200m leg for the squad.
Zach Pray ran the next 400m before handing off the baton to
Scott Spaanstra, who ran his specialty 800m.
Owen Westerkamp ran the final 1600m, crossing the finish line at 9:43.23 to close out the fifth-best DMR in program history.
4x400m Relay –
Kate Aniolkowski,
Kennedy Gardner,
Destini Dorkins and
Leeyah Samuels represented Grand Valley in heat two of the women's 4x400 relay. The women finished second in their heat at a time of 4:04.89.
Pole Vault
Three women represented Grand Valley in pole vault.
Ava Collier led the day, clearing 3.40m (11-1.75). Both
Giuliana Serapiglia and
Sydney Wilson recorded personal-best heights on the day. Serapiglia cleared 3.25m (10-8) to take seventh place in the event and Wilson grabbed 10
th with a 3.10m (10-2) best.
Camryn Battjes,
David Conrad,
Ryan Eck and
Ray Weatherington competed in pole vault. Battjes led the boys with a 4.80m (15-9) mark, ranking second overall. Conrad's 4.65m (15-3) mark not only landed him sixth in the event but granted him a new personal-best, as well. Eck and Weatherington both tied for ninth, clearing a height of 4.35m (14-3.25).
Jumps
Long Jump – All three Laker ladies in the long jump recorded a new personal-best at today's meet.
Zoe Zeiser led the squad with a 5.51m (18-1) mark to place fourth in the event.
Grace Moeggenborg's 5.36m (17-7) mark was the next in line, ranking fifth overall.
Gloria Stepanovich rounded out the top 10 with a 5.19m (17-0.5) mark.
Although the Laker men didn't record any new PR's, three jumpers ranked in the top 10.
Alec Crum's 6.79m (22-3.5) mark ranked him third overall.
Peter Van Hulle followed with a 6.51m (21-4.25) jump that granted him seventh place.
Josh Fernando closed out the event top 10 with a 6.48m (21-3.25) mark.
Dylan Lafontsee was the sole triple-jumper for GVSU. He recorded a 12.85m (42-2) mark to place seventh in the event.
High Jump – Grand Valley had four women compete in high jump:
Abigail DenOuden, Josie Bentz,
Ashley Atkins and
Lauren Rokos. All four Lakers cleared the same height of 1.53m (5-0.25) to tie for third in the event. DenOuden and Atkins tied their season-best height and Rokos tied her personal-best. No men competed in the high jump.
Throws
Shot Put – The men started off shot put for the day and collected three of the top five spots in the event and two personal-bests.
Myles Kerner came out on top with a 19.31m (63-4.25) mark that awarded him first place.
Andrew Berryhill took the final spot on the podium with a personal-best 16.43m (53-11) shot put.
Gerald Capaccio rounded out the top five with a 15.76m (51-8.5) throw. Finally,
Andrew Kraft recorded a personal-best 12.65m (41-6) in the event.
Three Laker ladies competed in shot put and collected three of the top four spots.
Maggie Stevenson won the event with a14.02m (46-0) throw.
Mackenzie Bohrer grabbed the next podium spot, throwing for 13.89m (45-7).
Kennedy Jackson finished in fourth with a 13.24m (43-5.25) shot put.
Weight Throw – Alexandra DiCanio,
Sophia Snellenberger and Natalie Pluff represented Grand Valley in flight three of women's weight throw;
Alaina Omonode and
Kennedy Jackson threw in flight four.
Alaina Omonode took the event win with an 18.86m (61-10.5) mark. Next in line for the Lakers was Natalie Pluff, who recorded a personal-best 15.78m (51-9.25) throw in the event to rank 10
th overall.
Kennedy Jackson's 15.72m (50-11) mark placed 11
th in the event. Alexandra DiCanio and
Sophia Snellenberger rounded out the weight throw for the ladies, throwing for 14.25m (46-9) and 13.43m (44-0.75) respectively.
The men closed out weight throw with a podium sweep, grabbing four of the top six spots.
Myles Kerner led the pack with a 20.33m (66-8.5) throw to win the event.
Michael Griffey tied his one-day-old, personal-best throw of 19.90m (65-3.50) to claim second place. James MacKey Jr. rounded out the podium with a 19.84m (65-1.5) mark. The final spot in the top six was claimed by
Lucas Lesher with a 17.68m (58-0.25) mark.

GVSU track and field will be back home in less than one week for the GVSU Tune-Up – the final meet of the regular season. The Lakers will host the Tune-Up on Friday at the Kelly Family Sports Center.
