Lakers Set for Final Road Trip of Regular Season

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team is back on the road for the final time of the regular season this weekend. The Lakers will travel to Hammond, Indiana to face Purdue Northwest on Thursday (Feb. 13) at 8:00 PM ET / 7:00 PM CT. GVSU will close their road trip on Saturday (Feb. 15) in Kenosha, Wisconsin to face Parkside at 4:00 PM ET / 3:00 PM CT.

GVSU is coming off their biggest week of the season defeating a pair of ranked teams. The Lakers upset #9 Lake Superior State 71-68 before dominating #16 Ferris State 94-62. GVSU improved their overall record to 12-10 and are 8-6 in the GLIAC. The Lakers sit in sixth place in the GLIAC standings and are one win from clinching a postseason berth to the GLIAC tournament.  
 
GVSU swept the weekly player of the week awards last week. Kaden Brown was named the offensive player of the week, while Shamus Thompson took home defensive player of the week honors. Brown scored a game high 25 points with four made three-pointers in the win against Lake Superior State. He followed it with a 15-point performance with two three-pointers against Ferris State. Thompson had a career night against Lake Superior State hauling down 13 rebounds with eight offensive rebounds and four blocked shots. He followed it up by grabbing a game high eight rebounds with one block and one steal against Ferris State.
 
The Lakers defeated Purdue Northwest in the first matchup this season 83-64 in Allendale. Four players scored in double figures led by Trevor Smith Jr. who scored a career high 18 points on 8-10 shooting from the field. GVSU knocked down 11 shots from three-point range and shot 47% from the field with 16 assists.
 
Purdue Northwest is 5-17 on the season and 2-12 in the GLIAC. The Pride are coming off an overtime win against Roosevelt earlier this week. Since losing to GVSU, the Pride have lost three of their last four games with two games going into overtime. Collin Albert leads Purdue Northwest in scoring averaging 15.2 points while shooting 38% from the field. 
 
GVSU defeated Parkside 59-49 in a defensive battle in the first matchup this season in Allendale. The Lakers forced the Rangers to commit 16 turnovers and scored 20 points off those turnovers. Smith Jr. led the Lakers in scoring with 14 points and swiped a career high four steals. Jalen Charity scored 1 2points and grabbed eight rebounds, while William Dunn added 11 points.
 
Since losing to GVSU in Allendale, Parkside has won four of their last five games and seven of their last nine games. The Rangers are 12-10 on the season and sit a game in front of GVSU at fifth place in the GLIAC standings with a 9-5 mark. Parkside is currently riding a three-game winning streak and will host Davenport tomorrow before hosting GVSU. Jack Rose leads the Rangers in scoring with 16.1 points on 43% shooting from the field and 38% shooting from three.
