Lakers Defeat Aquinas 87-65 Sunday Afternoon

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team closed out the 2025 calendar year with an 87-65 win at Aquinas Sunday (Dec. 21) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 8-2 on the season. 
 
Jalen Charity led GVSU with 17 points on 6-11 shooting and a perfect 5-5 shooting from the free throw line. Mason Docks scored 15 points, dished out seven assists, and swiped a career high six steals. Ethan Alderink notched 14 points with four three-pointers and three rebounds. Javion Otten added nine points, while Cam Regnerus led GVSU with six rebounds. 
 
GVSU shot 52% from the field and 32% from three-point range. Aquinas shot 42% from the field and 40% from behind the arc. The Lakers outrebounded the Saints 37-26 and outscored Aquinas 38-20 in the paint. 
 
Both teams got off to a fast start shooting over 60% from the floor five minutes in. GVSU would go on a 10-0 run to take a 24-14 lead with 10:30 minutes to play in the opening half. The Lakers forced seven turnovers during the opening 10 minutes that resulted in four fastbreak points including a dunk by Austin Tory. Aquinas would end the half on a 22-12 run to take a 41-38 lead into halftime.
 
In the second half, GVSU would go on a 12-6 run in the first six minutes. Javion Otten knocked down a three to give the Lakers their first lead of the second half at 50-49. Aquinas would take a 57-56 lead off a three-pointer that was banked in with just over nine minutes remaining. Ethan Alderink would hit three three-pointers in four possessions to put GVSU up 10 points at 67-57. The Lakers would end the game on a 31-8 run to claim the 22-point win. 
 
The Lakers will be back in action on New Year's Day when they resume their GLIAC schedule in the Upper Peninsula. GVSU will travel to Houghton, Michigan on Thursday, January 1st to take on Michigan Tech at 7:30 PM. The Lakers will close the weekend at Northern Michigan on Saturday, January 3rd at 3:00 PM. Both games will be streamed live on FloCollege.
