GVSU Highlights

GVSU Postgame Press Conference

#23 Grand Valley State claimed an 18-15 victory over Michigan Tech in GLIAC action at Lubbers Stadium before an overflow crowd 11,394. The Lakers will host Roosevelt in the regular season finale next Saturday (Nov. 15).

The Lakers got on the board first with an opening 8-play, 78-yard drive that consumed 5:05 off the clock. QB Andrew Schuster picked up a key first down with a 9-yard scramble when he appeared to be sacked and then completed a short pass to Lynn Wyche-El that he turned into a 34-yard gain. Schuster then hit senior WR Griffin Shinrock with a 7-yard completion for a touchdown to give GVSU a 6-0 lead.

Senior punter Trace Hrgich pinned Michigan Tech deep with a 57-yard punt and on first down a fumbled snap from center was hurried by LB Torian Wyatt and resulted in an intentional grounding penalty in the endzone that turned into a safety and a GVSU 8-0 lead.

Michigan Tech pulled to within 8-7 late in the second quarter, but the Lakers answered quickly. Wyche-El returned the kickoff 45 yards to the Michigan Tech 43-yard line. Schuster hit WR Kellen Reed with a 20-yard pass on first down, followed by a Schuster to Reed seam route that resulted in a 23-yard touchdown pass and a 15-7 GVSU lead.

After a scoreless third quarter the Lakers were able to get on the board early in the fourth quarter with a 10-play, 49-yard drive that resulted in a Mathew Bacik 33-yard field goal. The Laker offense converted key third and fourth down plays to keep the drive alive.

Michigan Tech pulled to within three (18-15) with a 10-play, 82-yard scoring drive late in the fourth quarter, but GVSU was able to pick up three first downs to run out the clock and secure the win. Facing a third-and-nine with just over a minute left in the game, Schuster hit TE Evan Furtney with a 14-yard completion and a first down.

Schuster completed 17-of-27 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 23 yards. RB Derrick Woods rushed for 59 yards on six carries and Syone Usma-Harper added 42 yards on 11 carries. Wyche-El caught four passes for 58 yards, Furtney hauled in four passes for 34 yards, Shinrock caught three passes for 21 yards and a touchdown, and Reed pulled in two passes for 43 yards and a touchdown.

LB Torian Wyatt led the defense with nine total tackles, including 2.0 QB sacks (-12), 2.5 tackles for loss, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. Safety Quinn Wills added seven stops, LB Elijah Baker six and CB Chris Little tallied three tackles and picked off his third pass of the year in five games. The GVSU defense held the Huskies 20 points and over 100 yards below their season averages.

Punter Trace Hrgich punted six times for a 43.7-yard average, dropping three inside the 20.
