Lakers Defeat UIndy 75-66 on the Road Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team closed out the opening weekend of the 2025-26 with a 75-66 road victory at Indianapolis Sunday (Nov. 16) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 2-0 to start the season, while UIndy falls to 0-2.
 
Trevor Smith Jr. led GVSU with 16 points on 8-11 shooting from the field with two assists and two steals. Jalen Charity notched 13 points and grabbed a team leading seven rebounds shooting 3-7 from the field and a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. Ethan Alderink scored 13 points and brought down six rebounds with two steals. Marcus Gray II added eight points, while Mason Docks dished out five assists and swiped a career high five steals.
 
The Lakers shot 41% from the field and 90% from the free throw line. Indianapolis shot 41% from the field and 68% from the charity stripe. The Greyhounds outrebounded the Lakers 40-32 and 11-7 in offensive rebounds. The Lakers forced Indianapolis to commit 22 turnovers as they swiped 15 steals. GVSU outscored Indianapolis 40-28 in the paint and 23-8 in fast break points. 
 
Indianapolis jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. GVSU responded with a 15-1 run to take a 15-10 lead with 11 minutes to play in the first half. Marcus Gray II would give GVSU a double-digit lead on a fastbreak layup with seven minutes to go. Shamus Thompson would push the lead to 16 at 38-22 on a tip-in layup with under three minutes to go. Indianapolis made a late push in the first half to cut the Laker lead to nine after the first 20 minutes of play.
 
In the second half, GVSU started on a 5-0 run off a three-pointer by Alderink and made jumper by Gray II to go up 43-29 just two minutes in. After trading a pair of baskets over five minutes, Alderink converted on an and-one opportunity to give GVSU their largest lead of the game at 54-35 with less than 13 minutes to play. UIndy would respond by going on a 12-4 run to cut the Laker lead to 11 with under 10 minutes to go. The Lakers would answer and push the lead back up to 15 on a Smith Jr. layup with eight minutes remaining. The Greyhounds would cut the lead to six with six minutes remaining but the Lakers answered with an 8-0 run to go back up by 14 points The Lakers would hold off the Greyhounds last push and would come out with a nine point win.
 
GVSU will travel to Sioux Falls, South Dakota next weekend for a neutral site game against Minnesota State on Friday, November 21st at 6:00 PM and a road game against Sioux Falls on Saturday, November 22nd at 8:00 PM.
