The Lakers began the season two weeks ago at the tip-off classic in Missouri, defeating Missouri Western State and West Texas A&M. They beat the Griffons 83-61, then won 73-59 over the Buffs. Paige VanStee led the way with 17 points and 6.5 boards, adding seven steals. MacKenzie Bisballe (15.5) and Ava Scanlon (11.5) both averaged double-figures for the weekend, with Bisballe adding seven boards a game and Scanlon shooting 8-14 from the floor. Nicole Kamin and Avery Zeinstra each scored in double-figures in one of the games.

Grand Valley State met up with both teams last season in Allendale, with the Lakers coming away victorious in both. They defeated Walsh 85-41, then took down Ohio Dominican by the score of 94-43. The Laker defense forced 25 turnovers in both contests and held both opponents to under 30% shooting from the field.

Saturday will be the season-opener for Walsh. They went 9-19 a season ago and were picked to finish 10th in the GMAC preseason poll. The Cavaliers are under the direction of first-year head coach Johnny Montello, an assistant coach previously for the school. Walsh returns two of their top four scorers from a season ago in sophomore Mallory Oddo and senior Kiley Dyrlund. The Lakers and Cavs have met seven times in their histories, with GVSU leading the series 6-1.

Picked to finish ninth in the GMAC preseason poll, the Panthers of Ohio Dominican return one All-GMAC player from last year, senior guard Sarah Ochs. Second-year coach Brianna Sims helped the Panthers win five more games in her first season than the season prior, and led them to a win over top-five Gannon on the road. The Lakers lead the all-time series over the Panthers, 6-2.
