#10 GVSU Claims 37-14 Victory Over Davenport In GLIAC Opener

#10 Grand Valley State returned to the gridiron Saturday afternoon before a Family Day crowd of 15,188 and claimed a 37-14 victory over Davenport in the GLIAC opener. The Lakers, which improved to 8-0 all-time versus Davenport, are 3-1 overall and 1-0 in GLIAC action, while Davenport falls to 2-2 and 0-1. The Lakers will hit the road next Saturday for a 7 p.m. matchup at Northern Michigan. 
 
Davenport struck first with a 10-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in a Kayden Collins 10-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead. However, the Lakers needed just three plays to go 51 yards for a touchdown, the final 28 of which was an Andrew Schuster pass to Sean Byrd. PK Mathew Bacik converted the PAT for 7-7 score. The Lakers then tallied back-to-back 9-play scoring drives to up the lead to 21-7. WR Kellen Reed finished a 9-play, 72-yard drive with a 29-yard reverse for a touchdown, followed by a QB Brady Drogosh 17-yard touchdown run that completed a 9-play, 80-yard drive. 
 
Davenport pulled to within 21-14 at the half with a 75-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the ensuing drive. 
 
Reed opened the second half with a 69-yard kickoff return and Drogosh finished the 4-play, 16-yard touchdown drive with a 6-yard run. The Laker defense forced a three-and-out on the first Davenport offensive series and picked up a safety when the snap sailed over the punters head. Drogosh completed the scoring late in the fourth quarter with his third touchdown run of the day, this one covering 12 yards for the final score. 
 
The Laker rushing game was able to get back on track with 254 yards and four rushing touchdowns on 38 carries. Ten different receivers caught passes, led by Bryd's three catches for 48 yards and a TD. Drogosh led the rushing game with eight carries for 71 yards and three touchdowns. RB Kenneth Jones chipped in four rushes for 37 yards and QB Zak Olejniczak added five carries for 36 yards. Schuster completed 11-of-23 passes for 124 yards and one TD. The Laker offense was 7-12 on third down and limited Davenport to 2-14 on third and fourth down. 
 
The Laker defense limited Davenport to 302 yards of total offense, including just 227 after the first drive of the game. Davenport completed 4-of-19 passes for 109 yards, 75 of which came on one play. GVSU recorded six tackles for loss (-27) and three QB sacks (-21). LB Anthony Cardamone led the defense with 10 tackles, while fellow LB Jimmy Downs added nine stop, 1.5 tackles for loss (-7) and a QB sack (-5). DL Jibriel Conde chipped in four tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss (-4) and a QB sack (-3).
