ALLENDALE – The No. 5 Grand Valley State women's soccer team returned home and defeated Northern Michigan 3-0 Friday (Oct. 24) evening. The Lakers improve to 11-2 on the season and 8-1 in the GLIAC.
GVSU would open up the scoring in the 39
th minute off the foot of
Ivy Wilhelm.
Mackenzie Ford sent a great ball that Wilhelm tracked down past the defender. Wilhelm made a move past the keeper and was able to kick it in for the opening goal of the game and her fourth goal of the season. The Lakers would double the lead with under 10 seconds to play in the first half. Northern Michigan tried to clear which deflected off Wilhelm and went to
Vesna Dennison who placed a great shot into the top left corner from 25 yards out. That goal was Dennison's first of the season.
In the second half,
Sarah Fromm made it 3-0 off her team leading seventh goal of the season in the 62
nd minute.
Kacy Lauer sent a ball to Fromm at the top of the box. Fromm made a smooth to create space from the defender and fired a shot that went under the outstretched arm of the goalkeeper.
GVSU outshot Northern Michigan 14-7 with 5-2 on frame. The Lakers produced four corner kicks and did not allow a corner kick to the Wildcats.
Acadia Murphy played all 90 minutes for the Lakers in the win. Wilhelm led GVSU with three shots and notched the game-winning goal. Dennison also posted three shots with two on frame in 74 minutes. Ford, Lauer, and Wilhelm each picked up assists. Goalkeeper
Macie Hunter made two saves and recorded her seventh shutout of the season.
