ALLENDALE, Mich. – Grand Valley track and field will host yet another indoor meet this Friday, January 24 with the annual Bill Clinger Classic. Both field and running events are set to commence at 1 p.m. EST in the Kelly Family Sports Center.
The Bill Clinger Classic follows the annual Bob Eubanks Open, which saw several Lakers shine. The team won 16 individual events, recorded 20 podium finishes and met or exceeded 23 NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field Provisional Standards marks. In addition, nearly 60 personal-bests were tied or broken.
Throws
Grand Valley's throws crews will feature three men and four women in shot put, including last week's individual champions
Myles Kerner (18.05m (59-2.75)) and
Erika Beistle (15.78m (51-9.25)). Six Laker ladies will rep Grand Valley gear in weight throw and the men will see three compete. James MacKey Jr.'s 20.97m (68-9.75) entry mark currently leads the squad.
Women's weight throw will begin at 1 p.m. with the invite flight. The women's open flight will precede the men's invite and open flights for weight throw. The men's shot put invite flight is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.; the men's open flight will follow. The women's invite and open flights will begin shortly after the men's flights have ended.
Pole Vault
Twelve athletes will compete in pole vault for Grand Valley at tomorrow's meet. At last week's Bill Clinger Open,
Wyatt Alwine and
Brooke Bowers grabbed gold, both earning spots in GVSU's Top 10 All-Time Indoor Record Book. Alwine's 5.11m (16-9.25) height ranked him fifth all-time; Bowers, a freshman, moved into the number seven all-time spot, clearing 4.05m (13-3.5).
The women will kick off pole vault at 1 p.m.; the men follow shortly after the last women's flight.
Jumps
GVSU's jumps squads will see action in both men's and women's high jump, long jump and men's triple jump. Several jumps records were shattered last week: five in high jump, three in long jump and one in triple jump. Six of those records found a spot in Grand Valley's Top 10 All-Time Indoor Record Book. This weekend, NCAA DII (indoor) record holder
Eli Kosiba (2.30m (7-6)) and GVSU (indoor) record holder
Kaylee Diamond will compete in high jump after more than a month off from competition.
Men's high jump, and both women's and men's long jump, which will occur in different sand pits, are all set to begin at 1 p.m. Women's high jump and triple jump will follow.
Sprints & Hurdles
The sprints and hurdles crews are set for an exciting Friday; GVSU will compete in the 60m hurdles, 60m dash, 200m and 400m events. Fifteen personal-bests were recorded through last weekend's sprints and hurdles events, including two by
Myles Rhodes that landed spots in the GVSU Record Book (60m – 6.83 (#4), 200m – 21.60 (#5)).
They'll kick things off with the 60m hurdle and 60m dash prelims at 1 p.m.; the top nine times from each event (compiled heats) will advance to the finals. The finals are slated to begin at or around 2:50 p.m., preceded by the 400m at 2:15 p.m. The 200m will see several Lakers compete and should begin around 3:40 p.m.
Mid-Distance/Distance
Redshirt-Freshman
Cara Newman shined in the 1 mile at last week's Bob Eubanks Open. Newman recorded a personal-best 4:57.30 time to finish first in the event.
Colin Vanderschaaf was the only other Laker to take the crown in a mid-distance/distance event. He finished first in the second heat of the 3000m, crossing the finish line at 8:37.43.
The 600m, 800m, 1 mile and 3000m events will see several Lakers perform on Friday. The Mile Open will kick things off at 1:40, running women's heats two and three and men's heats two through five. The mile invite, with just one heat apiece, is set for 5:50 p.m.
The 600m, which consists of one women's and two men's heats, is slated to begin at 3 p.m. Shortly after, at approximately 3:10 p.m., the 800m will commence; there are three women's heats and six men's heats. The 3000m event will be broken into two events: women's and men's heats one and two will begin at 4:25; women's heat three and men's heats three and four start at 6 p.m.
