ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team lost a tough 59-58 contest against Michigan Tech to begin the 2025 calendar year. The Lakers fall to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the GLIAC, while the Huskies improve to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the GLIAC.
GVSU shot 39% from the field and 78% from the free throw line. Michigan Tech shot 38.9% from the field and 36% from three. The Lakers outscored the Huskies 32-20 in the paint and 10-9 in fast break points.
Trevor Smith Jr. led GVSU with 11 points on 4-6 shooting from the field and two steals.
Shamus Thompson notched 10 points on 2-3 shooting from the field and 6-9 shooting from the free throw line. Thompson hauled down five rebounds and four offensive rebounds.
Kaden Brown added 10 points and two rebounds shooting 4-5 from the free throw line.
William Dunn scored eight points and led GVSU with eight rebounds.
Michigan Tech was led by Ty Fernholz who scored 18 points on 5-10 shooting from three-point range. Dawson Nordgaard scored 10 points on 5-7 shooting with three steals. Josh Terrian added nine points on 3-6 shooting from three.
