Grand Valley State has begun the season 9-1, and 1-1 in conference play. They split the opening weekend of GLIAC play, falling to Ferris State in four sets, then swept Davenport the following day. A big key to the Laker success has been their defense, as they lead the nation in blocks per set at 3.08, with Paige Sanders tops individually, recording 1.81 per set. On the backline, Julia Blaney has totaled 170 digs, good for a GLIAC leading five digs per set. Jordyn Gates paces a balanced Laker offense with 97 kills, with four more Lakers recording over 50 kills this season.

Lake Superior State has gotten off to a 2-0 start in conference play, sweeping both SVSU and Roosevelt in the opening weekend. The Lakers are 5-5 overall and enter the weekend winners of four straight. A big part of the success has been the play of Mariana Velasque and Gia Waters have both tallied over 80 kills this season. Directing the offense is setter Vanessa Swerdon, who has dished out 275 assists and is second on the team with 72 digs. GVSU has won 58 straight times over LSSU, last losing in 1989. During that stretch they have only dropped 11 sets.

On Saturday, the Lakers travel to take on the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State. SVSU has gone 3-7 to begin the tenure of head coach Lana Rybkowski. They are 1-1 in conference play, getting swept by LSSU, then turning around and sweeping Roosevelt. Sarah Veale has been the main source of offense, tallying 124 kills. Ava Beard and Jackie Scheiber have split setter duties, both tallying over 125 assists. GVSU swept the season series in 2023, defeating the Cardinals in four sets on the road, then in three sets in Allendale.
