Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 1 Lakers Downs MTU 2-1 on the Road Sunday

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The No. 1 Grand Valley State women's soccer team claimed a 2-1 road win at Michigan Tech Sunday (Sept. 22) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 5-0-1 on the season and 2-0 in the GLIAC, while the Huskies fall to 3-2 overall, 1-1 in the GLIAC.

Michigan Tech opened up the scoring in the 11th minute to take an early 1-0 lead. GVSU would respond late in the half off the foot of Kennedy Bearden in the 34th minute. Bearden received a great pass from Emma Chudik and tied the game with a shot that got by the goalkeeper at the bottom right corner of the goal. That goal was Bearden's first of the season and Chudik picked up her first assist of the season.

GVSU outshot the Huskies 7-4 in the first half. In the second half, the Lakers struck quickly, scoring the go-ahead goal 20 seconds in. Taylor Reid made a run on the right side and sent a cross that was originally knocked away by the Huskie defender, but Bearden was there and found the back of the net to give the Lakers the lead.

Michigan Tech tried to respond quickly after, but goalkeeper Cailynn Junk made a pair of great saves in the 47th and 50th minute. Junk would make her fifth save of the game in the 59th minute and the Laker defense would not allow a shot on goal the rest of the way to claim the one goal victory.

Shots were even between both teams at 11 apiece. Kennedy Bearden led the Lakers with two goals on two shots. Alli French notched two shots with one on goal. Kacy Lauer added a shot on goal and played in all 90 minutes for the fifth consecutive game. Daan Louwerse, Alex Williams, and Danielle Aitken each played in all 90 minutes. Cailynn Junk made five saves and improved her record to 4-0-1 in goal this season.

The Lakers will continue their conference schedule next week when they travel to face Saginaw Valley State on Friday (Sept. 27). Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM in University Center, Michigan.
