MARYVILLE, Mo. – The No. 2 Grand Valley State women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at Northwest Missouri State Friday (Sept. 13) evening. The Lakers move to 2-0-1 on the season while the Bearcats move to 1-1-2.
GVSU got offensive looks early with a pair of shots on goal by
Sophia Morgan in the third minute and
Kennedy Bearden in the seventh minute that were both saved by the keeper. Northwest Missouri State opened the scoring in the 14
th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Lakers quickly answered three minutes later in the 17
th minute to tie the score at one.
Alli French scored her first goal of the season off a great run in the box with the assist coming from Bearden. GVSU would get two more shots on goal late in the first half but both attempts were stopped by the keeper to keep the game tied at one at the end of the first half.
In the second half, the Lakers earned a corner kick in the 47
th minute and got a good look for Bearden who headed one just high near the right post. Two minutes later, GVSU got another corner look with a shot that sailed just left of the goal. The Lakers continued to try to find the go-ahead goal with seven more shots on goal, but the Bearcat keeper made key saves to end the game in a 1-1 draw.
The Lakers outshot Northwest Missouri State 22-8 and 13-4 on goal. GVSU also held a 10-7 corner kick advantage.
Kennedy Bearden led the GVSU with five shots and two on goal while dishing out her first assist of the season.
Alli French scored the lone goal for GVSU on four shots with two on goal. Amma Chudik added three shots with two on goal.
Mackenzie Ford played all 90 minutes of action and has now played in all 90 minutes in each of the first three games to start the season.
Kacy Lauer played all 90 minutes for the second consecutive game.
Cailynn Junk got the start in goal for the Lakers and made three saves.
GVSU will conclude their road trip in Missouri on Sunday (Sept. 15) when they face No. 4 Central Missouri in a top five matchup. Kickoff is set for 2:00 PM ET in Warrensburg, Missouri.
