Rosemont, Ill. – The Grand Valley State softball team opened up post season play at the GLIAC Tournament with a 4-3 come from behind walk off win against Ferris State Friday (May 3) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 34-14 on the season and advance in the winner's bracket of the tournament.
Ferris State jumped out to an early lead with a three-run first inning. The Bulldogs put up three runs on three hits in the inning. GVSU got on the board in the fourth inning.
Morgan Spicer led off the inning with a single through the right side. Next batter,
Kelsey Komorous doubled to center field that allowed Spicer to score all the way from first.
In the seventh inning,
Liberti Fair singled with one out. Two batters later and down to the last out,
Megan Koenigshof kept the Lakers alive with a triple to right field that scored the pinch runner
Faith Edwards making it 3-2. Next batter,
MaryJane Goodman singled to left field that just caught the line to tie the game at three, sending the game to extra innings.
In the eighth inning,
Genesis Eggart retired the Bulldogs in order to keep the game tied. In the bottom half of the frame,
Eliana Eiland led off with a single down the left field line.
Hannah Hollister singled on the next at bat with a bunt to put the winning run on second. Two batters later, Komorous singled through the right side to score Eiland to walk it off for the Lakers.
The Lakers out hit the Bulldogs 9-5 and both teams committed one error.
Kelsey Komorous went 2-4 with a double and RBI.
Hannah Hollister batted 2-4 with a double.
Megan Koenigshof and
MaryJane Goodman each hit 1-3 with an RBI, while Koenigshof scored a run.
Morgan Spicer added a hit and scored a run.
Genesis Eggart got the win in the circle (11-6) after tossing 7.2 innings allowing no runs off two hits with five strikeouts.
GVSU will play Saginaw Valley State tomorrow (May 4) at 12:00 PM ET in the winner's bracket. The winner will advance to the championship game on Sunday. The game will be streamed live on FloSports. Follow @GVSUSoftball for live in-game updates.
