ST. LOUIS, MO – The GVSU women's lacrosse team had their season come to a close in heartbreaking fashion in the Midwest Regional semifinals. The Lakers battled back from a four-goal deficit to force overtime, but ultimately fell in the extra time 13-12 at the hands of Regis.
The Lakers got out to a hot start, going up 5-1 in the first quarter.
Sydney Stone,
Ashleigh Rothe,
Hailey Crittenden,
Maddy Champagne, and
Ella Boose all scored for GVSU. The Rangers got two late goals in the quarter, trailing 5-3 after 15 minutes.
Regis scored three straight to take their first lead of the day at 6-5. Champagne tied it up at six, but the Rangers tallied the final goals of the half to lead 8-6.
Hailey Crittenden got the Lakers back within one goal, but Regis responed with three straight to go back up by four early in the fourth quarter.
From there, the Lakers went on a 5-1 run to force overtime. Stone,
Kate DeYoung, and Champagne scoring twice made it 12-11 Regis with 1:50 to play. The Rangers won the draw and were wasting time off the clock, but
Aislynn Alkire forced a turnover with 28 seconds left to set up the Lakers. GVSU had a breakout, and Stone was subsequently fouled and given a free position attempt shot. She buried it to tie the game at 12 and force overtime.
In overtime, Regis got the opening draw and was able to score with 5:09 remaining to get the win.
Maddy Champagne scored four times,
Sydney Stone added a hat trick as well.
Hailey Crittenden had two goals, while
Ella Boose,
Kate DeYoung, and
Ashleigh Rothe scored once. Stone, Crittenden, Rothe, and
Jillian Bingman all recorded assists.
Aislynn Alkire forced five turnovers and picked up five groundballs, while
Hope Leinen caused two turnovers.
Kylie Waeghe and
Kaylyn Cater both picked up two groundballs. Cater also made four saves in net.
