Lakers Close Out Regular Outdoor Season

Grand Valley State will compete in three Last Chance Meets this upcoming weekend.

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State track and field team close out their final week in the outdoor regular season with a variety of "last chance" meets, including the GVSU 10 Event Last Chance Meet. The GVSU 10 Event Last Chance Meet is set for Saturday, May 11th beginning at 12:00 p.m. in Allendale, Mich.

Schedule of Events – GVSU 10 Event Last Chance Meet

The Last Chance Meet will be made up of 10 events, eight field events and two running events, with the Lakers competing in only field events. 

On the women's side, Grand Valley State will take on four field events, the pole vault, discus, hammer, and shot put. Taylor DeHommel will lead the Lakers in the pole vault, as she currently ranks eighth in Division II clearing a height of 4.07m. Competing alongside DeHommel will be, Lily Renfrew, Kendyl Hahlen and Miranda Firari

Early this week at the Harding Last Chance Meet, Renfrew finished in first place clearing a height of 3.98m followed by DeHommel in third with a height of 3.68m.

In the shot put, the Lakers original five athletes will be competing lead by Mackenzie Bohrer who currently ranks fourth in Division II. Additionally, Erika Beistle and Margaret Stevenson are tied for eighth in Division II. Paige Westra and Reette Thorns will compete alongside the three ranked Lakers, in hopes to secure a spot at Nationals. 

Westra and Thorns both competed in the Hillsdale Last Chance Meet earlier this week, finishing in second (Westra) with a distance of 14.48m and fourth (Thorns) with a throw of 13.72m. 

Beistle and Stevenson will also be competing in the discus throw on Saturday. Both Lakers find themselves on the USTFCCCA Top 20 List, ranking back-to-back in first and second. 

Shelby Ulven, Alaina Omondoe and Natalia Pluff will take on the women's hammer throw beginning at 2:00 p.m. Ulven and Omondoe both find themselves in the Top 5 in Division II, ranking second and third overall. 

On the men's side, the Lakers will have five athletes competing in the pole vault lead by Wyatt Alwine and Dolan Gonzales. Alwine and Gonzales currently rank 17th in Division II, both clearing a height of 5.05m. Additionally, Jacob Krutsch, Colton Emeott and Camryn Battjes will take on the pole vault. 

At the Harding Last Chance Meet, Alwine earned first place with a height of 4.92m followed by Emeott in third also clearing a height of 4.92m. 

The men's jumps crew will compete in the long jump beginning at 3:00 p.m. Grand Valley State with have four athletes partaking, Luke Jelderks, Josh Fernando, Caleb Taylor and Chrisly Kelly-Cannon. Jelderks and Kelly-Cannon both rank in the Top 25 in Division II, Jelderks in 13th and Kelly-Cannon in 22nd.

The men's throws team will take on the shot put, discus, hammer and javelin throw. Bobby Maxwell and Will Gaston will represent Grand Valley in the javelin at 12:00 p.m. Maxwell recently finished in second place at the Hillsdale Last Chance Meet, recording a throw of 62.83m. 

James MacKey JR. and Nathan Spitzley will compete in the men's discus throw on Saturday. MacKey JR. currently ranks sixth in Division II with a throw of 55.91m, while Spitzley sits in 18th with a distance of 53.03m. Additionally, Spitzley finished in second place at Hillsdale with a distance of 49.75m. 

Shane Byrne will take on the hammer throw after recording a new-personal best at Hillsdale earlier this week, throwing a distance of 63.81m. 

Additionally, the Lakers distance crew will be competing at the Lee University Last Chance Meet in Tennessee on Saturday beginning at 3:10 p.m. with Taryn Chapko in the women's 800m. 

The sprints crew will be competing at the LR Last Chance Meet hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne down in North Carolina on Saturday and Sunday.
