NASHVILLE – The Grand Valley State softball team advanced to the Midwest Region two championship game. The Lakers lost to Trevecca Nazarene 3-2 in the winner's bracket and bounced back with a 4-1 win over Ohio Dominican in an elimination game.
Game One vs Trevecca Nazarene – L, 3-2
In game one, Trevecca got out to an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the top of the second inning. The Lakers quickly responded in the bottom half of the frame with two runs to take a 2-1 lead.
Liberti Fair,
Megan Koenigshof, and
MaryJane Goodman hit back-to-back-toback singles to load the bases with one out. Two batters later,
Eliana Eiland hit a hard grounder that got by the shortstop to allow the pinch runner
Kenedy Coombe and Koenigshof to score.
Trevecca Nazarene would score two runs in the fifth inning. TNU hit back-to-back RBI singles to take the lead. The Trojans would hang on for the one-run win.
Kelsey Komorous went 2-3 at the plate, while
Morgan Spicer notched a double.
Game Two vs Ohio Dominican – W, 4-1
The Lakers got off to a fast start scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.
Eliana Eiland led off the game with a single up the middle followed by a
Morgan Spicer double to advance Eiland to third. Next batter,
Kelsey Komorous doubled to center field to score both Eiland and Spicer.
The Lakers would score one run in the second inning to extend the lead to 3-0.
Hannah Hollister led the inning with an infield single and stole second on the next at bat. Three batters later, Eiland drove home Hollister with a single to left field.
GVSU made it 4-0 in the fourth inning.
Megan Koenigshof and Eiland hit back-to-back singles for Spicer to drive home Koenigshof with a single to center field. Ohio Dominican would get one the board in the sixth inning to make it 4-1 but the Lakers would hang on to advance with a 4-1 win.
Eliana Eiland led the Lakers offensively going 4-4 at the plate with an RBI and run scored.
Morgan Spicer hit 2-3 with an RBI, run scored, and walk.
Kelsey Komorous hit a two-RBI double, while
Hannah Hollister notched a hit with a run scored and stolen base.
The Lakers will take on Trevecca Nazarene in the Midwest Region two championship game tomorrow (May 11) in Nashville, Tennessee. GVSU will need to beat the Trojans twice in order to advance to the Midwest Super Regionals. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM ET / 1:00 PM CT with the if necessary game to follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
